I’ve had plans to race more NYC early-morning park races, but those haven’t panned out. I’m going to do a handful of small crits in NJ - maybe very soon.
I’m making plans to travel up to the Porky Gulch races, since my sweetheart is from the area. We’d like to go and win. We’ll see.
I have a buddy from NYC who does one of those Mt. Washington races every year.
Tell me about Cross racing. I know nothing. What are the courses like, lengths? what kind of bike do you roll. Im suddenly interested!
I never gave Cross much thought till my son and I went to Gloucester on a random day to hang about, and they were racing that weekend. It looked like a lot of fun so I gave it a try.
I did 3 races last fall, 2 at Mt Washington and 1 in Lowell Massachusetts. The courses were about 1 to 3 miles? Dirt road, hard pack single track and churned up grass with some steep hills to run up and barriers to jump over.
I rode my SS/fixed converted Trek 750. Once SS, and Fixed for the other two races.
A friend, rode one of my hardtails for one race and his Langster with a cross fork and CX tire up front and a 28mm road tire on the back.
For this fall I got a K2 Enemy frame that I’m going to build up 1x9, with parts from my hill climb bike.
Yeah, I’ve lived and raced CX in a few places, and there’s always a handful of riders on singlespeed bikes. The prevalence of the Bianchi San Jose more or less assures this.
There are usually a handful of ss riders down here. They just race with everyone else. I remember seeing some ss only stuff in the obra season.
Down here is GA, I was one of the handful last year. I’m doing gears this year, I’d like to see at least one podium this season. I might do a few masters races SS for shits and giggles though. Can’t wait for fall.
I wasn’t really blaming the bike, I think I had a pretty respectable season riding SS last year. There were a few races where I lost 2-3 places spinning out on long straight finishes (Blue Ridge most notably).
