If you join USA Cycling, they provide a list of ongoing events in your area. Also, I would be shocked if there’s not a regional messageboard or mailing list for cycling in your area - they have one for seemingly every region. So find that, or ask around at your LBS. Most dudes in shops LOVE to talk about racing.
I also can’t wait for fall. I wish it were already here, even though that means missing the track and road season.
If the weathers good, I’ll be racing up Mt Washington this weekend.
I hit/got hit by a car this afternoon. He had the right of way and it was totally my fault. As I arched through the air and hit the ground all I could think about was the race.
The bike is OK but my “good” hip is a little sore.
Could have been worse. It was a wake up call. Need to be careful out there…
i raced my first crit last night - after work, and after a 20 mile ride up to northern new jersey. smallish field of about thirty riders, over a really fun 1 mile course with some really rough sections that were great for either slowing down the field and forcing any attacks around you, or attacking on! my stealth teammate said i did too much work at the front.
with a few to go the sprinter-filled pack didn’t want to reel in three people who were off the front; pace was at about 31mph coming around the last turn down the long straightaway to the line. i was near the front and my teammate moved ahead of me. people started sprinting really early, i caught a wheel and then launched right after my teammate did. he took first in the field sprint and i took 3rd, for 6th overall…
Hail! The 22% grade was like a carpet of pea sized marbles .5" deep. It was coming down harder then I’ve ever see hail! I was spotting riders up the last grade and caching some before they fell. I lost a couple on a tandem though. It was just to much with the standing on marbles and me being tired and all. I did slow their fall down though.
It was an Ultagra hub laced to a Sun M17A. I pulled my 9sp cassette for Nico, he slapped on his 10, did a rushed cable adjustment and he was off.
I did not do as well. 1:38:14. 44 seconds slower then in July. Conditions were near perfect with no wind .Lots of PR’s and Age group records were smashed.
I felt great the whole way up and was chatting and joking with other riders. I should have kept me head down and worked harder?!
About 10 min after I finished the hail begin. Some peeps were walking their bikes bare foot. No traction in roadie shoes.
I met a 71 year old that rode 200+ miles from Amherst MA on the bike he raced! The oldest was 75 the youngest was a pint sized 9 yr old on a custom Colnago with 18"(?) wheels.
The D2R2 was the most suffering I’ve ever had on a bike. 80% of the ride on dirt. I got lost twice and ended up doing over 85 miles on loose gravel roads. Long pain filled grinds followed by awesome descents. On one paved section an older guy and I hit 51 mph Some cars were in front of us so we had to slow for them! I regularly hit 40+ on some long dirt sections.
I ran Tufo 32mm Elite tubulars @ 50 psi .The tires felt great. On one washed out descent, I was ripping it up passing all of the timid, bunny hopping rocks and ruts. I bottomed to the rim a couple of times. Not hard enough to dent the rim but hard enough to feel it. No pinch flats! I love tubulars off road.
I met 6 people who did Mt Washington and all including me thought it was a cakewalk/ride compared to this.
