29 inch monster cross tires

right now i have specialized borough xc 700x45 (haven’t measured, but there’s no way they’re actually 45) tires, and they’re not perfect but ok on the street and not perfect and ok-leaning-toward-not-so-great on trails (granted, the moments i’m thinking of were on sandy, unbanked hairpin turns, but even on other turns i felt much less traction than i wanted).

so, i either need a tire that’ll do the trick on the street and be rad on trails, or get a 29x2 ba like guysshoe did on his xcheck and whatever is rad for the trails and switch tires. narrow 29er tires, or big cross tires, it’s all good. max is probably about 1.8 for a 29er tire, and the minimum i want is 40mm actual size. suggestions? what i know so far: the vee rubber xcx is of interest, i really wish ritchey made a giant version of the speedmax, and it’s a plus if qbp carries it because at this point i can order through there but not other distributors (yet, should be able to order through wilson soon).

hm…gumwall aesthetically displeases me and if i can find bigger i’d rather go as big as i can fit. but i’ve heard much good about these tires. i’ll add them to the list, anyhow.

also, i used google to find the pics of the xcheck with vee rubbers and it took me to the pyb thread, but not to the page. however, in the fbft thread, that guy mentions the bike. if you read this can you post the pic?

Go forth, and read.

i’ve looked at that, the only suggestion i recall getting for a cross check was panaracer fire cross. looks ok, i just want other options so i can find one that’s both good and affordable.

edit: shit, there’s a lot more here than what i got when i was googling tires for the surly.

I’ve fit bontrager 29.3 2.0’s in my x-check, and I’m pretty sure that’s as big as I’d wanna go.

still had room for fenders vertically, but tires were as close to the seatstays and fork blades as I’d ever like to get.

Yeah, blackmtncycles’s blog has a couple of great posts regarding the Vee 12 and Clement xplor MSO, have to read back a couple of pages.

Good review of the Clement here, too:

Another tire to consider is the Bontrager XR-1 Team 29x1.9.
If you can find them NOS or used, Bontrager also made a 29x1.75 Dry-x, I’ve seen the same tire labelled XDX 29x1.8, too. Not listed anymore.

Specialized Borough CX Pro 700x42: 42.5mm actual width on 26mm rim. New and barely ridden.
Bontrager Dry-X 29x1.75: 47.5mm actual width on 26mm rim. Plenty of miles.
Bontrager XR-1 Team 29x1.9: 48mm on 24mm rim. New, never ridden (only mounted for this photo).
Bontrager XDX TLR 29x2.1: 56mm on 26mm rim. Plenty of miles.

elder, those look awesome…looks like i’d have to have some patience and track down two 2.0s/two pairs on ebay or something tho. kinda like for the bontragers. bummer that finding decent narrow 29" tires or fatter 700c tires new is so hard, but i guess it’s a pretty niche market.

oh, kenda karma actually looks kinda decent too. never know just what to think of kenda tires, tho, some are awesome, some are krap.

Have a set of Vee rubber 12 in 29x1.95 size way in the basement. They measure 45mm actual on Dyads and look the business for some fire road riding.

Mods rename thread to “29 inch monster cross tires”?

Done.

Boner for days! Please bring this to D2R2 and lock it up in my truck. I’ll be sure to get it back to you by Christmas if you don’t finish the 180 before I finish the 115…

Sorry kidz, sold the frame/fork/wheelset to finance a new mountain bike frame.

Also, won’t make it to D2R2 this year :frowning: I realized I’m flying back from Crankworx at Whistler that same day. Piss poor planning…

If I come across a random $100 bill in my cycling budget, I’m buying the hell out of a pair of those Rock n’ Roads.
