the old hakkepellitas were available in a shitload of sizes including 650b, 700c, and 28" — and the ones that made it to the US as the first real MTB tires were in very short supply, because the Soviet military bought out the whole production capacity from the Finns, that rubber boot and tire company later spun off their radio division as Nokia
the original BG clones were made some years after the hakkas really stopped being produced, and then those were only made for a few years themselves
and then like a decade afterwards, Wes of Willits fame browbeat WTB into making the original Nanoraptor as the first “29er” tire, which also has a zigzag ridge tread pattern (just without the square blocks), and kickstarted the modern movement
