Alien has a JIS crown race. This pisses me off.
Mill it down baby.
It was funny reading about the peeps on bf in the gb that neglected to realize this and didn’t purchase aliens headset.

Question Mr. Fezdango: is that powdercoated or the stock paint?
Rode a track-ish bike at a local shop today, was a (too small for me) 57cm frame by Maxway that I think was more or less a Steamroller clone with different track ends (more like what the Alien comes with). Really liked the handling but the guy was a little unclear about the geometry; he thought it was 73* head and seat tube. I think it was steeper than that, because of how it handled, but who knows.
In any event, even though it was way too small for me, it rode really nice and if a “true” track bike handles anything like it, then I’m in love. Definitely was different than any road bike I’ve ridden, but all in a good way. I’m feeling good about the Alien move, really good. I’ve sent an email to Joseph to see if the 63 size can be had or not; that might work well for me with its 60.5cm top tube.
This is what I did, however remember that the fork length only allows for a 32mm stack…

The Alien headset that I received were missing parts and was not of quality that which I would want to install on my bike. The Alien frame is really awesome.
Which headset did you end up using? Any pics of the completed bike?

That sucks… I’ve been eying their frames for like 2 weeks. I was sorta hoping that their components wouldn’t be like everyone else selling the cheap “comes with” comps. Esp. since you almost need this set.
Sounds like more than “almost” to me?
Or does anything else fit? Sounds like stack height is the biggest issue based on the posts from RobotRider above.
i never noticed that that wasnt the stock fork
So much better.
Why would anybody want a threaded headset.
Yo dudes,
Tange Levin JIS works totally fine on the Alien. And looking at that vs. the stock Alien h/s, the Tange is a bit nicer.
^ - Someone outlined the shallow reasons why in the Langster thread.
I’d never buy a new frame that required a threaded setup.
In fact, i’m considering converting my road bike to threadless.

I’m slowly but surely doing this to all my bikes. Jesus, it’s hard as hell to find forks that mate up nicely to my ~64cm lugged steel frames that have enough steerer to run threadless.
eh, i like my threaded stem
i have a pair of risers with a stem on em.
its easy to swap bars. one bolt.
plus i think it looks good
I really like the classy look of the threaded also. Apparently tho… its the new thing to hate on.
I’m running threadless on my alien. You just have to take your frame to a knowledgable bike shop and ask that they ream and face the headtube. Veloshop in PDX did it plus they installed the headset I had for $35. I also had a threadless track fork as well.
Having not ridden any other track bikes, I don’t have anything to compare it against but I do like it.
Drawbacks:
-
The headset deal (if you dont want to to go through the trouble of getting the headtube reamed and faced.
-
The track dropouts are a little long and don’t fit standard chain tensioners.
-
Clearance of a front fender is really tight (but then again you are riding a bike that is designed for a velodrome)
Threaded is fine for bikes which pre-date threadless, but it’s outdated and impractical today. So when people talk about new bikes with threaded setups, it causes a few of us to scratch our heads.
