Anyone use energy gel or drinks?

I don’t care to argue this point anymore… But I will post the link. It is an interesting theory and I find that it works for me…
For sure take note that it is from Hammers site, and they don’t sell breakfast foods…

There’s probably some truth to it. Here is the more technical, properly referenced version without all the sales pitches in it…http://www.hammernutrition.com/za/HNT?P … LE.ID=2981

This really only seems to apply to someone who is RACING longer then 60-90 minutes. I you don’t ride at 100% it doesn’t really matter. My toast, cottage cheese, and banana breakfast eaten just minutes before my ride isn’t really slowing me down any.

I wish I could find some decent nutrition advice for sprint-based cycling shit, becaues the grand majority is all endurance stuff like the Hammer PDF on their site. Gives good info for sure but I’d be inclined to think pre-race nutrition for a sprint event would be different.

I think the makers of Guu used this cookbook (arguably NSFW):

ahahahaha. just bought 2.

I am amused at how they tout maltodextrin as a complex carbohydrate that is somehow beneficial. It essentially behaves like glucose:

http://www.gleukos.com/downloads/pdf/Maltodextrin.pdf

It is indeed a complex carb:

“Maltodextrin is a polysaccharide that is used as a food additive.”

“Polysaccharides are relatively complex carbohydrates.”

Malto is strange like that.

Either way I have yet to use it on long rides but it seems to be the hands-down favorite for people that do. Honey works wonders for me… honey + malto would likely be even better though, for a larger variety of carbs.

It is undoubtedly a complex carbohydrate, but the glucose response is very similar to simple carbohydrates. I don’t see how it could be any more or less beneficial for endurance activities than any other simple carbohydrate common in sports drinks/bars/gels.

I have been somewhat mystified by that as well. It’s touted at the same time as a great thing to put in your workout drink for fast insulin response, as well as something to drink long distance for sustained energy. In the end I see the foods with fiber and complex carbs as the sustained energy (the ‘real’ food I eat on a ride: PBJ, Clif bars, bananna) and the gel/honey as a fast/temporary boost in between the solids…

I remember there being a thread over at fixed gear fever about nutrition in sprint events that Gord Singleton (world masters champ, Canadian champ, worlds silver medalist) had some input on. Try tracking him down over there. His user name is “2006” and he is very helpful when it comes to sharing knowledge with younger riders.

What Sports drink/Bars/Gels are you talking about?
Because…
Gu: Gels and drink mix- is entirely Maltrodextrin based =100% complex carbs
Power bar: Bars, Gels, Drink- is mostly Maltrodextrin based with fructose and other stuff to give it a 80%/20% complex/simple carb make-up
Cliff: Bars, Gels, Drink- Is all based on organic brown rice syrup with a 70%/30% Carb make-up
Hammer: Gels and Drink are all Maltrodextrin based =100% complex carbs

The Major Gel/Bar/Drink producers are all using very similar calorie sources…

Gatorade is based on an almost entirely simple carb make-up. But I dont think anyone would really suggest that you attempt to consume all of your daily calories from gatorade…

… i just got some honey stinger energy gel packs, pretty tasty![/quote]

+1

i am good friends with the honey stinger rep here in colorado, so i pretty much exclusively use honey stinger gel, chews, and energy bars. i eat the protein bars post ride. not only because it’s free, but i have had the best luck with it. it also tastes the best…

:bear: and tarckbears love honey :bear:

I prefer to eat real foods (WWPB&J, potatoes, hard boiled eggs, bananas, trail mix, granola) on long rides for sustenance, but on the latest century I rode I used a couple caffeinated gels near the end that I felt gave me an extra boost. I also keep 1 bottle of water and 1 bottle of Cytomax, but only put about half a scoop in a 20oz bottle because any more makes my mouth slimy and I have to spit a lot. I ate an apple on a ride one time and I puked.

Well, I know what I’ll be bringing for the next potluck here at work!

Hey, why is it some roadies will eat/drink things that even dogs wouldn’t touch, is that their idea of fun? I mean dogs will eat random shit that’s on the ground, drink out of toilets… What’s up with roadies? Some of this stuff is really nasty, not at all my idea of fun.

^ Examples?

Competitive athletes tend to see food a little different than the average couch potato - to them, it’s a source of fuel, recovery and performance - not just taste. This is arguably a better way to look at food rather than purely from a culinary/taste perspective.

I don’t call the crap I eat in my bike “food.” Shit’s “fuel.”
