I’m also in needing-winter-gloves cru, thanks to Reynaud’s causing super painful numbness whenever it gets below like 40

Are the Ninja Ice jawnz decently windproof? we have pretty dry cold around here, rain/wetness isn’t an issue, it’s just the damned bitter cold that numbs my fingers out completely. If those aren’t my jam, any recommendations in windproof-way?
I have the Ninja Ice full-dip hi viz. IMO they work well in the low 30s, maybe high 20s, but not much colder. They seem pretty windproof for me. They make my hands sweat in the 40s and I use really minimal Castellis then, but I run warmer than some so ymmv. They are a cheap option so can’t hurt to try. I imagine good xc gloves would be great as well, since they are purpose built for this kinda thing.

I definitely dressed for the first mile and turned into a sweat monter by the time I got to the office.
My water bottle froze solid.

a person i live with who likes to clean by pushing shit under shit or in shit moved my balaclava so I bussed it today. two bus juggle to get 3.5 miles is far more miserable than not riding with a balaclava in -1\*. regrets aplenty this morning.

Did some glove testing today:

L-R: Bontrager RXL, Radians RWG800, Ninja Ice

![](https://scontent-ord1-1.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xta1/t51.2885-15/e35/12479446_574129489400869_351343703_n.jpg)

Temperature was 28 when I left and 21 when I got home, riding a MTB on pavement and snow (both packed and loose).

As reported the Ninja Ice aren’t really up to subfreeing temperatures but I found they at least kept my hands a uniform temperature with no cold spots. The rubbery fingers are a little weird when they rub together. But pretty amazing for a $7 glove.

The Radwear RWG800 Hi-Viz is certainly hi-viz with the reflective knuckle patch. It has heavy insulation and should be warm but it didn’t do any better than the Ninja Ice. They’re only $10, and the dense insulation does do a good job of keeping cold from coming through the palm of your hand. I was hoping that the rubber palm material that extends over the thumb and forefinger would help keep my thumb warm, but the cheapish construction means there’s cold spots at the tips of the fingers. I also had a cold spot on the back of my hand - either the high-viz material isn’t as windproof or I was getting cold under the cuff. Might not be a bad commuting glove if you’re not prone to cold hands. I think there’s $10 worth of glove there, it’s just that they’re not the miracle the NInja Ice are.

The Bontrager RXL Softshell Split Finger doesn’t feel like it has much insulation, but these are the warmest gloves I’ve ever used. Worth the $70 price tag if your hands are always cold. I’ve been using Toko XC ski mittens and these are better.

Now that Ninja ice have broken-in a bit I’ve noticed that the insulation has become compressed where they make contact on the bar.
I haven’t tried to wash them yet but wondering if that will destroy them or poof up the insulation?

Also getting really annoyed with the liners separating from the outer part.

One friend has had really bad stink-glove with these but I’ve had great luck with them staying fairly neutral. I usually pop them on the boot-dryer every night so perhaps that is the secret.

Is it possible for the oil in my hydro dick lines to freeze or something?
I’ve been getting some rotor rub and the lever pull has seemed shorter since the bike spent a night in my sub-zero garage.

icecrash hugs. Usually they are good about cleaning up the streets, but I could see some around here there were just iced over after the 1" of snow.
I did a black ice crash 7 years back and cracked my laptop screen. Less effective switch from 15" to 12" powerbook there.

I throw mine in the wash all the time. I’ve never noticed the insulation pack down so maybe it helps.

There’s enough salt on the ground to leave me coughing for a few minutes after I get to work each day, but it finally feels like winter. Solidly in the mid/upper 20s. Shorts n tights, ankle high waterproof shoe covers over my vans and a hoodie and jacket and I’m not exactly warm but I’m comfortable enough for my short commute.
