I bought [this](http://www.giro.com/us_en/m-wind-guard-scuba.html) on a whim a few months ago and it’s great, albeit goofy looking. Blaclava when you need it, bandana-esque when you don’t, layers well over thermal and under jeans jacket. The worst couple days of this season’s winter so far are behind us here, so far the hands & the cellphone battery are the weakpoint. ---

Anybody have experience with goggles over your glasses? i’ve been getting very teary eyes lately with just my regular glasses in the cold. ---

I went from Cali to the midwest a couple of years ago and ended up in the same boat. I had thick socks, thick PI overboots, and my toes still froze. Last spring I bought some winter boots on clearance (Mavic Drifters) and this year I’m kicking myself for not buying them the minute I crossed the Divide. One thing that might make a big part of the warmth difference is that one typically buys winter boots a size larger so that you can run thick socks and not compress their insulation or the blood vessels in your foot. So if you can’t drop the money on a set a of boots, it might be worth trying to find a pair of road shoes a size bigger on eBay and adding a layer of foam or cardboard under the insole. Ideally these shoes would have low profile velcro or lacing so it’s easy to pull your overshoes on and off. One of the best things about winter boots is that when you get home, cold and tired, they’re easy to take off. I hated wrestling with my overboots and the ratchet buckles on my shoes. ---
