We rented some fat bikes on the east side of the cascades last weekend and I decided to try my new low-cut bogs + OR Crocodile Gaiters.
I was worried that lack of laces on the boot would allow snow into into the gaiter/boot interface but surprisingly the entire thing worked flawlessly!
Tromped around in waist-deep snow with snowshoes and crashed on the fat bike many times but feet stayed warm and dry in the 32deg F weather. Since they were low cut boots my ankles had plenty of flexibility and worked great on platform pedals.
I went on a 3 hour ride last night in 28deg weather wearing just wool socks and regular (well ventilated) mountain shoes. My toes were really cold initially (and I though I had made a huge mistake) but then once I started working harder + getting the blood flowing, they stayed warm the whole time! I think i can contribute some of this to the shoes allowing my sweat to evaporate, because last time I did a similar ride in similar temperatures, I wore insulated hiking boots – and my toes were completely numb by the end.
It’s cold, again, guys. Sucks.
I’m OK with it.
Need to get a new pair of winter boots though.

Got these this year. Wife calls em my prom gloves, but my monkey arms approve. My freakishly long fingers mean the wrists are baggy, but that’s my life.
Still trying to find gloves that are good below 25f but aren’t so bulky that you can’t brake/shift. Might have to resort to some claw-like jawns.
Closest I ever came was bar mitts plus some cheapo ski gloves from Costco. Biggest problem with those gloves is that they didn’t like shiny drop bar levers so I couldn’t ride road bikes with them.
I'm getting into my first winter in Richmond, I'm not sure whether I need to unpack my bag of rain gear from when I lived in the PNW or my ICE HELL gear from living around the Great Lakes. Like, am I going to be damp and chilly, or am I going to have to strategize how to keep my eyelashes from freezing together and welding my eyes shut? Time will tell.get me into spd boots that don’t cost $500

Five Ten Freerider EPS shoes, wool socks, and platform pedals work well down to about 20f.
Supposed to be 9* tomorrow. Fuck. Hopefully the will at least be snow.
Hmm, I’ve been happy with shoe covers and duct tape over the sole vent holes down to about 5*f. Maybe different shoe covers? I get those ones that look like scuba suit material. Pretty sure those gloves I posted above will be fine into the teens too. They’re waterproof and a reviewer wrote about how he liked to ski in them because of the dexterity they offered compared to ski gloves. They feel like what I was expecting out of the ninja ice gloves, but didn’t get.
Bring it on!!!
