Spotted a fellow bike commuter today wearing nothing but gym shorts and a hydration pack.
It’s 29° outside.

Maybe he’s doing the Wim Hof Method.
I heard him on jre and I can’t tell if there’s bd involved.
Temps have been single digit or lower lately. Doesn’t help that Google thinks I’m in Dallas so if I don’t put in my city in I get temps in the 40s or higher.
I’ve never used studded tires, for 4 years of commuting in NYC and now 1 year in central PA. We have some bad ruts on the gravel MUP (more footprints than bike tracks) but I got by riding a SS cross bike the whole time and just walked if it got bad enough.
also, what does tarck think about this? Never head of it before.

I sort of did it in 2014. I slept outside every night for almost the entire winter and slowly increased my tolerance for the cold, and got more comfortable with being cold. Coldest night I ever slept out was about -20ºF and I did it in a +20ºF sleeping bag. By the end of the winter I felt way different. I did not need a jacket most of the time, my ears and face stopped getting cold and I ditched my balaclava and goggles, and I just generally felt pretty good.
I didn’t know this was a thing hipsters/baby boomers do… maybe I’ll do it again.
You definitely adjust to cold. Your body is real good at that. Most of the people in this thread are probably already more adjusted than people driving to work.
The only benefit of smoking right now is spending more time outside to acclimate.

Looks like just 26x1.75 in stock but cheap enough to snag one for fun.
Is this where I complain that it got down below 50 yesterday? I almost had to find my gloves.
To be honest I kind of miss the whole gearing up for winter thing. Figuring out which strategy to approach 8 hours on a bike in 33 degree rain is shitty but fun. Do I want to be warm or dry, because both aint gonna last all day.
it was -6F on my commute to work today.
I felt fine though.
On short rides in single digits, toe caps and Swiftwik wool socks in normal shoes works really well. Haven’t tried it for longer rides, but for getting around town my feet stay warm.
I’ve got these
I am not a particularly cold person, but I ALWAYS have cold toes. I’ve been using these for the past few winters, but they might be at death’s door.

They are fleece-lined, and are by far the warmest booty I’ve seen or used.

These are great

this is single digit…fahrenheit? this would NEVER work for me. my toe cover minimum temp is like high 20s F.
I have a pair of the fleece-lined shoe covers sold under various brand names that I purchased from amozan for ~$15. Wasn’t expecting much from 'em but they held up through last winter and still going strong. Not completely waterproof but water resistant (and planning to try a nikwax-type waterproofer to improve) and warm enough for my 5-mile commute. For longer rides in the cold I like to put a chemical hand warmer between my shoe and the shoe cover right over my toes.

I’ve only used them for 10-15 minute rides. Half hour or more might be a different story.
Dude that’s not even a tarck century

I’ve used these on longer rides around the same temp, I don’t suggest it.
That seems to mostly what I’ve been doing lately. I have some pearl shoe covers from somewhere for longer rides.
Any tarcksperience with “winter” helmets? Those earmuffs are looking nice right now in Colorad0°.
