We don’t have a heatmap yet, but have begun development on it. We are going to be releasing routing improvements soon that take popularity into account (i.e. you’re more likely to be routed on streets that have been ridden by other riders than ones that haven’t). That doesn’t replace a heatmap but will address some concerns around determining what streets are safer/preferable for riding in unfamiliar places. RWGPS still requires payment to unlock the essential (IMO) features.
Personally I pay for both because I think they both offer great services.

Ha ha - I don’t personally have an opinion on that, but I’ll say that we pride ourselves on providing the kind of support that makes our users want to pay us. Hopefully that will continue!

Thanks for the info and the link to the feature list!
The predictive route planning based on popularity will be super helpful but I still think there’s so much to be gained from using multiple sources - I’ve found some super silly bike paths using Google, that no one has probably ever taken the time to ride.

For a person that just likes to store rides from various devices and look at basic stuff like elevation, is the free rwgps pretty much the same at free Strava?
Except I just realized that rwgps probably is less friendly to all of my hiking and running activities, right?

So you need like a reverse heatmap? Or something that compares heat map to available suggested bike paths, weeds out streets, and highlights those never traveled?

You can use the RWGPS route planner for free (this is different than Strava, I think), but the advanced route planning features (POI, custom cues, etc.) are paid. You can record and upload rides/runs/whatever on a free account, but voice navigation is a paid feature.
As far as using it with runs, you can totally record, navigate, etc. runs on RWGPS. The thing we don’t have (yet - this is something we’re looking at adding) is activity types. That means right now, everything you would upload is categorized as a ride, and you get metrics that reflect that. If you like things like Strava’s pace analysis, you won’t find that at RWGPS right now.

Ha yes I think so! I’ve been planning group rides for 2.5 years in Denver and am having to get real creative to not re-trace previous routes. I really like finding the older neighborhood paths along creeks that don’t exactly connect perfectly but do make for some serene moments. The hard part is leading 10-20+ people through it all… from the front of a tandem…
