7/4/7 is pretty good. For a bike you really use the paperyness of s3 would be a drawback.

TBH I’m shocked it’s taken this long for someone to be a UT tech & bike nerd or purchase a probe and set.

Dunno how common wallpaper paste as couplant is outside of froggy & my arena, but it is super cheap and easy to get. sexytime lube will work too, water in a pinch but it runs away too fast.

Reading through paint is done by taking peak to peak echos, where you look for the back wall and front wall. Shitty operators with cheap gear will remove the paint in the area to measure, leaving a nice rusty spot.

That meter used is pretty basic, but if it’s only measuring carbon steel within it’s range it’s fine (you need to calibrate for different velocity in different materials). That unit has a low range of 0.63mm and accuracy of +/-0.1mm, so it’s not ideal for measuring artisanal tubes where you’re usually under 0.6mm. _edit_ maybe it’s the top end model if it was super spendy, in which case the low range and accuracy are better.

This is the sort of thing our techs use:

Nice to meet you and ride with you, dude!

I think you got it all for your frame - Reed just didn’t measure both ends of all the tubes, he got the center and one end or the other.

For everyone’s curiosity, [here’s what I recorded](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1urejV6eWDyKlkd5eaSD44ORL-NRfDbTdBky8ayNa1QY/edit?usp=sharing) from breakfast on the 2nd day - maybe 1/3rd of the frames Reed poked and prodded at. He also measured a bunch of other frames on the morning and evening of the first day, Jan’s tandem was a major endeavor to measure all on it’s own!

sounds like an elcometer ~~MTG8~~ **307** based on ~2.5 bong price **roughly matching the 1.9 bongz with 0.9 bong discount** listed on elcometer’s website. that would make it probably not inaccurate @ ±1% or
±0.015mm (moar accurate than Blakey said, probably cos he assumed a MTG2 or 4) still lists ~~0.63~~ 0.15mm minimum thickness though.

note that USM35s can be had on ebay for ~6 PI bongz

EDIT: moar armchair NDTing indicates teh 307 would actuallly be the right tool for teh job, assuming guy actually articulated his needs to elcometer (or can google)

Not sure what everyone did on Sunday. I think Jan & Natsuko took the tandem and a group straight to the Bremerton Ferry along the shortest route.
We headed north to Poulsbo and skirted the base the long way. Ended up on some really nice low traffic roads as we followed the security fence. Then took familiar roads to catch the Bainbridge Island Ferry.

> Yesterday Thurs we were talking about the new bike and how, if we call it a mountain bike, then it’s automatically a lesser and apologetic meek one, compared to what that modern mountain bike has become–a technological military vehicle for battle against your riding partners and the land. As a mountain bike, bike X comes off as “retro,” which also isn’t the point, and isn’t fair to it’s hidden super futuristic features, so much more than meets the eye, that make it so groovy.
