I really wanted to pick up a set of the slightly more modern canti brakes that came on the early '90s Voyageurs, Dia Compe XCEs. Looking up particular cantis for sale though usually moves the parts from “old” to “vintage” and prices go up to match. They didn’t look like they had as much adjustability as CX50s and they weren’t cheaper, so I figured it was a moot point. (What really concerned me was the height and narrowness of the brake posts. CX50s seemed to let me mount the brake pads as far down and as far out as possible while maintaining an upright cantilever angle. That and smooth post kool stops were a pain to find in a bike shop, while threaded ones were all over.)

Working at a collective now. Smooth post cantis are the worst part of the job. Except for when I get told someone’s life story while helping them look for a small part.

tbh i hate smooth posts with a passion until i adjust threaded post.

but mostly i just hate cantis. i do, for some reason, keep an emergency pair in the parts bin though.

Bike shop owner opposes bike lane on one of the most unsafe streets in the city.

Well of course he has customers who drive cars

yeah but as a single business, that’s probably a good time to be pro-bike lane, especially since, according to his count, 99% of the other shops are also against it.

He actively hurts his business by being (or appearing to be) against it, while if he acts like he’s in favor of the bike lane, it’ll still get opposed by everyone else.

That’s a good point. He doesn’t sound savvy in that way though. Have you been in that shop? It doesn’t really have a progressive bike advocate vibe.

also, I worked at a shop in DC on a really busy bike lane, and people had absolutely no problem parking in the bike lane in order to either drop their bike off, or do several hours of test rides, and that’s without California’s “park anywhere” culture.

I would say bike shop is likely to have more park-in-bike-lane customers than like a t-shirt store or whatever, except for maybe food service.

Yeah that lot is also no more than like $5/hr at peak hours and as low as $2/hr off peak. Also, street parking is not that bad in the neighborhood.

Source: Live a few blocks from this shop, have a car, never spend more than 10 minutes looking for parking, ever.

So what blogs should I be reading if I like:
-relatively long entries spaced relatively far apart
-more text, less images
-mostly road stuff, some offroad travelogues ok
-some technical stuff, but more like “I made my own derailleur pulleys out of chewing gum and epoxy” and less “7 top racing bikes wind tunnel tested”

Except with PVD all the long text is about PVD’s narcissism, to the extent of forgetting to write about any actual technical details
