i was feeling the fomo until i remembered i have a sw8 apron
Holy shit this is a bad take. Victim blaming toward teens on e-bikes without accounting for negligent drivers, and misclassifying SurRons which lack pedals and are effectively e-mopeds/e-dirtbikes (and used similarly to street takeovers, which occur in NYC all the time?). It’s also much harder to suddenly stop/brake on a bike than in a car.
“these drivers have 55mph roads, surely it’s the teens on e-bikes to blame ”
Hopefully the author is on twitter for a proper bullying session
Idunno I see plenty of kids on e-bikes riding incredibly recklessly and irresponsibly. I don’t blame the kids though. I blame the dumb ass parents that let them do it.
Kids can do dumb shit on analog bikes, and always have. E-bikes just happen to be popular now, because maybe rich parents? Idk
Lots of things wrong with how folks ride e-bikes and mopeds and regular bikes and scooters and cyber unicycles. None of them are as wrong as how folks drive cars.
My wife was totally like ‘Oh the NYT has an article about teens and e-bikes’ this morning, because my 14yo had expressed interest in one. Then she starts reading it and was like ‘Okay the first example is just a teen getting hit by a car. Bystanders say the teen did nothing wrong.’
‘There’s a quote from a sherif saying e-bikes are… too fast for sidewalks? And too slow for the road?’
‘They’re talking about e-bikes that go 70 mph?!’
Looks it up
‘These don’t have pedals. This is an electric motorcycle.’
Dogshit article.
And how wrong it is there no viable alternative mobility for kids like 10-17. Our public transit and city planning basically ignores that kids might want to do stuff together, after forcing them (parents) to live outside city centers and areas with stuff to do and away from other people and their friends.
The e-moped super 73 type bikes are a great solution to this but 0 oversight, instruction, infrastructure, education, and minimal two wheel experience leaves me with the fear that kids are gonna get smoked left and right.
and of course people will blame the ebikes and not the cars
I remember this discussion when 49 cc moped/scooters were the issue. I still see kids riding around on pit bikes.
I’m guessing this will cause NTSB to classify electric motorcycles like they did for small gas engines back in the 80s.
damn, I remember really wanting one of these back in 2005 when I first got into bikes
maybe I’ll get a wald bag just for funsies
I ordered a custom 139, couldn’t be happier to send them off
They already do, there’s just a huge unenforced not-actully-gray area for electric things with two wheels, all of which are “ebikes” to the public.
really sad.
I hate when the media refers to these as a “training accident”
another murder by car
i worked his pit in Rochester CX this year in the mud. we had dinner after with him and his whole team. great kid and great team. and he’s the first young person my son has ever met who has died, so he’s pretty upset too.
Weirdly, it was a hit-and-run motorcyclist that caused the death and injuries.
17-year-old Magnus White has been identified as the biker who died in a tragic crash yesterday in Boulder, Colorado. Magnus White passed away in a deadly crash involving a motorcycle. According to Colorado State Patrol, a motorcycle crashed into multiple numbers of cyclists on Lefthand Canyon Drive. One of the cyclists was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident. Law enforcement agencies say the motorcyclist attempted to flee the scene before crashing again. The deadly incident has left of the Boulder Junior Cyclist dead.
From what I’ve read/heard, the motorcycle was a different incident that hit a couple riding a tandem. Magnus was hit by a woman in a car. Both on the same road, same day though.
So she was staring at a phone?
