Come at me bro. I was on there for 5 years and only made like 500 posts. And i didnāt have a blog.
TC: When doofo posted that I thought about going back to delete all my threads on dickforums.
Most jackass one is me asking for suggestions on how to magic gear my Jamis Aurora conversion. I ended up running it SS with one brake
I am so glad I had my dumbest phases before the internet, when cameras and film were expensive, and people forgot stuff.
Damn straight.
21st century gender relations and everything.
Damn straight.
Yupper
bows head in shame
I converted a Jamis Aurora cyclocross the other day using some parts I had laying around, and it went pretty piss poor. I was hoping that 40/16 would be a magic gear, given that is what I had on hand and it has vertical dropouts, but I didnāt have such luck. The chain can be knocked off by tilting the bike over rapidly. I believe a half-link will work, so I am going to give that a shot. If that doesnāt work going up a tooth in the front should put it where it needs to be, then once the chain stretches I would go to a 17 in the rear. In addition the 175 crank arms + toe clips give quite a bit of overlap for the front wheel. Itās a shame, the bike rides like a dream otherwise. I might put the Sora group back on the Jamis and sell it, and put the SS stuff on a Pista frame that is too big for me and sell that, then pick up a group buy Iro frame and build it up. Decisions decisionsā¦
But does it have to be embarrassing? It seems like the people who are most embarrassed of their past actions are the ones who acted like cocky jackasses, thinking they knew everything when they really knew almost nothing. I donāt know a lot about bikes, but I doubt Iāll be embarrassed by my posts here and other places in 5 years when I (hopefully) know more. I guess that could be because I havenāt started a blog to showcase and glorify my ignoranceā¦
ā¦but I guess Iām saying that lack of knowledge about something isnāt inherently embarrassing (or shouldnāt be) unless you act like a jackass.
All that said, what are some GOOD cycling blogs for beginners?
Beginners donāt need blogs. Do what the rest of us did, read Sheldonās site. Then read it again. Then get Leonard Zinnās repair manual and read that. Everything else can be learned by riding your bike, fucking up, crashing, braking parts and then getting back on and riding some more.
Yeah, like most things, it is a matter of just getting out there and trying. I was pretty slow on my re-up to cycling. Bought a san jose ss cross bike because i knew i could make it fixed when needed. Oddly enough, it came fixed coz they fucked up, so it was a bit of a learning curve. I just continued to read the forums to pick up info in things like the DQ thread, and did most of what kyle said. Reading sheldon and trying to fix the things on my own. I got to building up a mountain bike on my own (save headset install and fork cutting) and that gave me some confidence. Next I built up IRO group buy but cut fork too short because I didnāt understand difference of headtube size. I learned, and continued to ride.
Good point, Tim. I canāt help but feel that Lovely Bicycle represents the post-Sheldon era.
I miss taking an old dudeās wisdom from a plain html page. I think Iāll pay the site a visit and find something I havenāt read before.
Me and aek fucked shit up on a daily back then
mine was asking what the stepped down threading on my fixed hub was for. i knew about cogs and lockrings, but i had never seen a fixed hub in person beforeā¦so it just didnāt click. ![]()

Iām not talking just bikes, I mean in general. Believe me, I would have found a way to embarrass myself.
Hereās an example. Even though I was an avid Sheldon reader and tried to be āpracticalā, when I got a huge bonus several years ago I built up a Tarck masterpiece of a conversion (polished deep Vs, white saddle and bar tape, red and white frame, polished Campy cranks, etc.) then got rid of it in a few months because I was so stressed to leave it locked up anywhere. It was totally out of character for me and was just a product of bike lust from looking at cool pictures online. I learned my lesson quickly, but still, kinda jackass.
That was in my thirties. All I can do now is laugh. I was much more jackass in my teens and early twenties.
the post-Sheldon era.

Ah, I misinterpreted your quoted post. I, too, am glad my most awkward phases are mostly undocumented, and Iām sort of glad I never had money during them. Iām also with everyone who says LovelyBicycle will probably look back at a lot of her posts and cringe later on, which is probably pretty normal for every blogger ever.
