I wonder how things like that make it all the way to production. I felt like a fucking idiot when I had to use one of those until I figured out that it’s a terrible design.

Huh, I thought it was kinda nice - you just have to pull up to engage it and it turns easily.

It’s such a good derailleur for drop bar adventure bikes - it’ll easily do 11-36t with nerd cranks, more than enough range for bikepacking and no need for a goatlink or a tanpan. The clutch makes it really quiet on rough gravel/offroad. It’s probably my favorite bit of componentry in the last year or so.

Can confirm, clears 40t pie plate nicely, 1000% better shift quality compared when using a tanpan

Isn’t it also the missing link that lets you use ultegra shakes and the XT M8000 cassette?

We still talkin’ about the RD-RX800 clutch’d ultegra dangler?

You can use that (or the non-clutch RD-R8000-GS, or the 105 RD-R7000-GS) with the 11-40 cassette. Shimano won’t tell you that you can, but you can. 11-42 is dicey unless you use a wolftooth thinggummy. 11-46 is off the table, as far as I can tell.

You’ve only got 39T of official capacity to play with, so with the 11-40, you’re limited to 10T between chainrings if you want to run a double. With the 11-42, only 8T between chainrings. You can probably push that a little, but note @Eddbread’s report [here](https://tarck.cc/t/did-you-just-shartq/23/3095) that trying to push to 45T of capacity (16T between chainrings with the 11-40 cassette) is a no-go.

I was talking about the R8000-GS shadow dangler- but that is good info on the RX800 also.

Two related max load/flagging bikes from the museum in Osaka:

A Schwinn from bikecentennial and a Japanese dudes round the world Cannondale (bike was replaced halfway through, guess it cracked)
