Cheap fixed touring wheelset

i’ve done 35s

Nice. Then I’ll be trying 30’s or 32’s on my tarckbike for shits. Pretty sure I’ve got the clearance.

Mavic Open Sport?

The MA-3 wasn’t great, and the Open Sport is supposed to be its successor. As far as I can tell, a poor man’s Open Pro that doesn’t really save that much.

Open Sport is a decent box-section rim, the same as the MA-3. It might be a little straighter than a CR-18. If you wanted to build something specific, I’d be willing to receive the parts, build the wheels and ship them for you.

32H CR-18s on IROs:

IRO hubs: $40
64 spokes $64
CR-18 $58
Silver Nipples $6.40

$168.40 plus all the associated shipping costs.

The VO deal is looking pretty good.

Also, from Mavic’s website regarding Open Pro:
Recommended tire widths: 19 to 28 mm

Open Sport
Recommended tire widths: 19 to 32 mm

A719
Recommended tire widths: 28 to 47 mm
At 567 grams it’s not too heavy to consider for touring. Spendy at >$70 a pop, though.

aren’t recommended tire widths pretty much useless?

Actually, I just looked into the inner rim width of the CR18 and it’s 19.5mm, apparently not Sheldon-approved for tires under 28mm. I’d like to be able to run anything from 25 to 32. It looks like a narrower rim is in order for that range.

The M13 II is a little narrower and probably ideal. Anyone know about it? It’s not double walled like the CR18.

you can always put a bigger tire on a smaller rim, but not the other way around.

Look at a Salsa Delgado rim: 22.5mm width, commonly used for at least a 45mm tire.

The M13II is double walled.

you will have absolutely no problem with 32s on an open pro.

I can’t believe you even have this many options for a pre-built ‘fixed touring’ wheel. Any non-aero rim will be fine for 32mm tires. Even those would work, they just look dumb. Your problem is, you’re on the slippery slope of purchasing, whereto get the strongest wheel, you should go double butted, but then you’ll have to go custom built, but then if you’re going custom, you might as well spend a little more and get Open Pros, and now you’re spending well over $100 more than you’d hoped.

Basically you’re overthinking it. Get the M13s and a spoke wrench

Edit: this mentions they’re double wall

Yea, that’s a pretty accurate description of the predicament. Not a serious one. I’d go Open Pros without a doubt if I wasn’t planning on investing in a Nexus-8 equipped rear wheel later on. That wheel will be taking the bulk of touring, while the fixed set is mostly for the city.

Right, almost any box rim will be fine for 32mm, but I’d like it to also be fine for 25mm. Seems like the CR-18 is not ideal for 25 or 28’s.

The M13 is good for tires “up to 32mm” (as opposed to the CR-18’s 38 or 40mm), so it should be more suitable for 25mm or 28mm too.

Thanks, all. I guess this means I can’t add the wheels to my Velo Orange order, but Bicyclewheels.com is pretty cheap.

thanks?

whoa whoa whoa, if you don’t want visual reinforcement, then so be it. post edited

Thanks. I’ll definitely consider it if I decide to go for Open Pro’s. Otherwise I’ll probably get something pre-built.

i have a CR18 in the rear and have used 23s/25s regularly

Yea, not sure how much stock to put into Sheldon’s implication of danger to the rim with tires that are too small. I guess it mostly depends on the type of riding.

Why the shit are you touring on a fixed gear?

i had the same dilemma, ended up getting the open pros to sealed formulas, now i’m just worrying about chainline…

i’m planning on running 32s on them,
next choice was the sun m13’a, kind of regret not getting the sun and saving the moneyzz

Zen, you get all of it. Please note, Open Pros are not touring rims. So says Peter White:

Let’s be very clear about something. Rims for racing bikes, such as the Mavic Open Pro and Velocity Aerohead, are made for people who use bicycles in races. That’s why they’re called racing bikes; because people actually race with them! To be a competitive road racer, you will not want to weigh much more than about 160 lbs. Even at that weight, you’ll find yourself at a significant disadvantage in many road races, at least those with any hills. Since the manufacturers of racing rims are aware of this fact, they don’t bother making these rims strong enough for 230 lb cyclists, regardless of whether those 230 lb cyclists have the curious notion that it would be a good idea to ride a bike with “racing rims” and 23mm tires.

If you’re a skinny fucker and you’re touring lightly, I’m sure they’d be fine, though. If fixed, there’s also a lot of benefit in having a non-dished rear wheel. A 32H open pro non-dished is way stronger than a 32H open pro dished for 8/9/10s.

when i fuck up my open pros touring to canada from san luis obispo this summer,
because of their “lack of strength” well i guess it’ll be my lesson learned.
all 6’3’’ 180 of me, and pretty loaded bike, i’m not worried
