Compendium of Internet Fit Advice

This pedal spacer thing confuses me greatly and is one of those things that I would never know how to look or check for. I love that it’s a thing and it works, I just know nothing about it and don’t think it’s a thing I’d know how to eyeball.

Have you thought about going with Speedplays? They have different spindle lengths that seem like they could really do the trick for you.

But they are also Speedplays. I don’t see this as an overall improvement.

i also ride 78cm but im 6’3"

overall body length is a poor indicator of saddle height
I’m also 6’3" and am at ~83cm
I’m 6’2 and 80.5

I don’t think doug’s really 6’3", but I’m basing that totally on size bikes he rides and never met teh dude so idk

so good

78.3mm saddle height w/93mm of setback and 14cm of saddle to bar… I’m 6 foot nothin’

At my shop we don’t use lasers in bike fits. Everything is done manually. But we keep a laser level (so sort of a laser, just not lasers in the computer software bike fit sort of way) and this is pretty easy to check for. Just use the laser level on vertical and check their stance. if their knees are flaring out with every pedal stroke, the stance is wide and needs to be accommodated down at the pedals with some pedal washers.
If you were checking yourself, you just need a mirror in front of you while you ride the trainer.

My stance is narrow on the bike, but I have one foot that i angle kinda weird so my ankle rubs the crank if i don’t space out the pedal.

Or it means their saddle is way low?

If you’re worried about stance, you shoulda figured out your saddle height a long time before.

six foot one

80cm saddle height, 8.5 setback

5mm of that saddle height is the stupid forefoot wedges under my orthotics. I have huge (size 47) flat feet that need 5mm of forefoot wedge to control the instability.

my seat is where it was in the kangaroo leather vittoria and campy platform pedal+toe clip days, even though my pedal+shoe stack should be at least 5mm lower…

on the plus side, unlike in the 80s I’m not getting a tendon or muscle injuries every year because my shitty feet are finally under control. one thing about modern “scientific” fitting does well is getting foot issues sorted out properly – if the person doing the fit understands bike position and is a qualified orthotic technician or physical therapist. if they’re a fraud for hire who also has insoles to sell, watch out…

im like 1.2 mikeys tall

You’ve also been known to lie about your height…

i also have huge feet—and more to the point—really long toes
i tend to slam the cleats as far back as they go on just about every shoe
b/c i pedal heel-flat at the bottom of pedal stroke
bam, 78cm saddle height

Yeah, my cleats are slammed back as well

How are you guys measuring setback? To the tip, presumably?

That photo rules.

Doug and I are pretty close in height, but I think I have him by a little. He’s probably measuring to the top of his soluxurious hair.

Yeah, I’m a pretty awesome photographer, apparently.

I’m just going off what my retul report said. But I presume from tip of nose over vertical plane of bb.

That’s what I figured. That measurement doesn’t translate to different saddles.
