Compendium of Internet Fit Advice

Are there any shoes that let you slide cleats farther back than my current sidi mtb ones? I’ve been noticing some foot fatigue when I ride my ss cross bike and end up grinding slowly on some trails. Also have had turf toe so would like to keep the pedal farther back on my foot.

not really atmo but it wouldnt be very hard to drill and slot sidis

sidis about as far back as you get. middle of the slot on sidis is like slammed back on giros and shimanos atmo

might need a stiffer shoe ime
How did you determine what length cranks to use? Did you just make an assumption? Take someones word for it? Trial and error? What’s the best way to determine this?

I have a 30in inseam and am using 175 cranks. I know people with longer legs than mine using shorter cranks. Then there are praying mantis dudes like Fred who wants longer cranks. It all seems pretty random.
Crank length has an influence on bike fit, but pretty much has no effect on power output. Ride whatever length cranks you like. If you change crank length, you’ll adapt pretty quickly. I’m about your size (assuming 30" is your pants inseam and not PBH) and ride 172.5mm because that’s what someone sold me once when I needed a bike in a hurry. If I were ever going to switch, I might go to 170mm to get a little more clearance… Maybe. I’m already using a moderate amount of setback and I’m not sure I want to “fit” myself into a corner with regard to what saddles and seatposts I can use.
Hi all

Can someone repost the article and/or gif that illustrates how shitty small 700c bikes are at fitting small people?
and a few other things to click around on that blog

Guess it’s time for a new fit… in the meantime anyone got a bit of insight on this?

So have now had 3 months back on the bike after missing last season. My flexibility has dramatically increased and I think it’s fucking with my position… I am rotating my hips back more while simultaneously getting longer: I find it more comfortable to hook 1 finger above the shifter w/ 1 under rather than the previous 2 underneath (pulling my torso forward/down). As a result of one/several of these now when I do hard efforts I feel like I’m trying to draw all my power from either the tops of my knees (which understandably don’t have much power) or my lower back. The knees thing is such that I’m unable to respond to surges or really hard efforts in the drops, I can climb from a more upright position a bit more comfortably, but eventually it gets to the point where I feel like I’m trying to rip my knees apart.

My thought is that the hip rotation + getting lower (and maybe less ankling?) has resulted in my saddle being too high/forward? Would it be worth it to try dropping it down 5mm or so and getting it back maybe 5 as well?

forgot to say:

Thanks Kevin!

When I have this experience, going back and up usually helps, but I think it depends on whether you’re dropping your heels or not.

Yeah, I need to check the ankling. If I recall correctly the last fit saw me ankling more than before, and so it’s likely i’m back to keeping my ankles lower now? Thanks Heath!

I was watching some old Merckx videos today. Dude kept his heels down like whoa.

Sigh. I need more setback on my dentist bike. Good thing I’m building another bike I can pawn parts off onto.

Heels down or heels up doesn’t matter so much, really other than the fact that it has an effect on saddle height. Setback can cause one to move from one to the other, further exaggerating the saddle height problem.

When in doubt go back and up. If your hips are rocking, bring it down some.

Heels down looks way better. Smooth and so-forth.
Heels up looks all staccato and shit. It might be just as effective but it ain’t pretty.

Heels up engages the calves more. It really depends on one’s specific anthropometry.

Bringing the saddle back will increase distance to the pedals, so maybe take it the saddle back by a few mm, then start moving up?

Yeah. One change at a time. You might even need to go down.

as a dude with huge calves I can get with this. Always was the first thing to hypertrophy when I started training for rowing (sculling) season.

I can tell I’m in shape when they don’t fit into skinnyish jeans.

Moved the saddle up a tiny bit. Feels much better, but still wants to come back a few mm, which I can’t do with the current post. Close enough for now though.

okay. Doing a little fitting to procrastinate on this sunny day. who wants to help me. I did the pendulum from the knee thing. I’m KIFPS (knee in front of pedal spindle) but KOPS is bullshit anyway. I have a video. Tell me what to do!

“video is private”

But I can tell you, slam your saddle back.

That. Also, eat your wheaties. Also show us ur boobs.
