HELLO WELCOME BACK
I should have taken pics from last weekends cx races here in Bend. the course winds around the Deschutes brewery and the costumes on Sundayās races seem to always be awesome.
There was a centipede costume, using one of those spiral-wound fabric expanding kids play tunnels as the body between the two riders. BUT! They were not on a tandem, it was two single bikes that somehow stayed close enough and sproinged around the whole course and didnāt fall. It was amazing.
There was also at least 4 tandems racing in the singlespeed category.

And on Saturday the caterpillar ate one Clif Blok, one mouthful of sand, one bottle of Skratch Labs electrolyte drink, but he was still hungry.
unrelated: lotta flatbar setups in that video. Thatās kinda a new thing?
HY
holy shit that caterpillar thing is great
Fancy hybrids have been the cool kid rig of choice in Portland cross for as long Iāve been here (10 years).
I think a lot of people just accepted it as cheaper to crash and destroy mtb shifters than shakes.
I think itās a lot of mtb bros and mtb bro wannabes. Also, if your course is muddy and/or technical, arenāt flat bars ostensibly better?
One time me and a buddy got on his tandem and went to the tiki bar and then to see slayer at the memorial coliseum
Definitely would bro date again
Edit:we didnāt make out or anything
Damn I miss me some West Coast stupidcross.
I hate being the only fuckup in my race all the time.
my dad used to race tandem mtb (fun as hell) and they had a peg on the back so the captain could mount, stoker pushes while captain pedals, then stoker gets on without making everyone fall off
Agreed.
And I donāt think it has much to do with cheaper if stuff breaks, so much as more fun to ride. Mtbers are already used to the bars.
Though doing new cables sure is nice when you donāt have to deal with bar tapeā¦
Huh. I moved out of portland fifteen years ago, and they were not popular then.
I totally get why they make sense for cx, Iām just surprised that people are breaking out of the orthodox setup so freely.
Keep Portland weird or whatever.
Back when I fancied myself a cross racer, I did the flat bar singlespeed thing. It helped me suck less on the technical stuff, though it made shouldering more awkward.
But most importantly it looked cool.
I traded my Fuse and a surprisingly small amount of dollars for a Seqouia Elite last night. Itās fun. Heavy, but not too bad. The saddle sucks, and Iām not sold on the bars, and Iāve already lowered the stem some more, but overall Iām pleased.
Bonus saddle bag made by @Straws out of a Thomson chair post bag.
Thatās a good looking headset!
