Niners rip. Excellent geometry, finish quality, etc. They do some pretty amazing hydroforming. I only wish that they would come to their senses and make a legit cyclocross bike (bringing this thread full circle).
dude
despite all their “It’s not a cross bike” and “gravel-specific geometry” protestations
the Niner RLT has entirely standard cyclocross geo — the BB isn’t low, the chainstays aren’t long, and the HTA isn’t slack
Yeah? I never really looked into it. I just remember reading Niner’s marketing fluff about how it wasn’t a cross bike, it was a gravel bike, blah blah blah… Didn’t look into it more. I’ll check it out now.
I have a Niner EMD. It would be great as a gravel bike, but kinda sucks as a mountain bike. I’m looking to get rid of it soon.
Once you go slack you don’t go back
bro.
Why does it suck as a MTB? Head tube too steep?
It’s perfect with a crabon fork, rigid, 1x9 for city riding and easy-peasy singletrack.
City riding and easy single track? Sounds like CX work to me.
The head tube is too steep. It’s great for climbing steep trails…as long as there’s absolutely nothing technical about them. I’d probably be more into the frame if I raced, but for enjoying most trails out here as a non-racer it doesn’t give me all of it.
I like steep head tube angles. I don’t mind them. Geo is actually a hair more slack than my old Kona Big Kahuna.
We have a shit ton of steep ass hills and I’m planning on racing next spring.
Getting back to the “modern MTB tech frightens and confuses me” theme:
Getting Shimano hydro dick brakes–how can you tell what size rotors to choose?

160 f/r is cool if not getting crazy
180 f / 160 r is fine for almost anything
200 f / 180 or 200 r is really DH only
So the brakes themselves can be adjusted out to whatever diameter?
Really, talkin’ to a caveman here…
Yeah. You can get adapters for different rotor sizes.
180/160 is a nice combo, IMHO.
Get the IceTechs. Well worth the extra dollhairs.

Yeah, the calipers can be used on (almost) any rotor size. If the brakes come with rotors they will come with adapters. Frames and forks are “usually” set up for 160mm, and then you use the adapter from there (post mount vs. ISO, size, etc.)

I’m maybe jumping in on this thread, I’d be dumb not to buy this for $1500 right? I know the owner, he literally took 4 rides and one 2 hour race on it, fucked up his back and doesn’t want anything to do with MTB’s anymore.
Yeah scoop that up.
Scooped! Seller is also throwing the stock wheels and tires. See y’all in the MTB thread.
Send it
