Originaly planned on 85 but ran in to some folks heading out on a bikepacking trip and added about 10 miles riding with them heading in the opposite direction, plus adding another 600 feet of elevation gain.
Did some silly looping on a bike path and through neighborhoods to finish off the 100, but would have been better served just cutting things short. My legs and back quit on me at around mile 90 but I was stubborn.
It was a fun route though, I got to ride on some roads I haven’t been on since last summer including one of the best descents around here.
Cool and overcast for the first half but really warmed up for the last hour.
Felt really slow but I was under 7 hours moving time, which is my fastest 100 to date. I was quite surprised especially since this route had about 3500’ more climbing than any other 100 I’ve ever done.
I wanted to do this ride last weekend, but it started hailing on me at around the 30 min mark. The weather was much better today. The only tough part was the shitty committee upstairs didn’t quiet down until 1.5 hr mark.
Double overnight at Ft Worden State Park. Drove to the ferry on the first day and the campground was 4 miles from the dock on the other side. We were worried about getting one of the 3 hiker/biker sites on memorial Day weekend but we ended up being the only ones there, amidst the RVs.
On the second day we did a 36 mile ride that had a cidery at the midpoint and other fancy beers at the end. It lightly rained nearly the whole time. We got back to the campground to find that the water was out. Luckily they had working showers at the other end of the park.
Clinton to Port Townsend.
You can park overnight at the Clinton ferry for $10 a day (plus discover pass).
Very well maintained park with lots of interesting things to explore. Good roads to ride and Finn River cidery is a cool place to ride to.
Port Townsend has great food. We went to a very fancy place for happy hour and got amazing food and drinks for like $90. https://www.restaurantfinistere.com/
It’s taken reservations for cars even longer than the San Juans ferries did, and now is essentially mandatory to get a car reservation days in advance, but still “ride right on” for bikes.
Took last week off for what’s become an annual solo bike tour. This time clockwise around Lake Michigan from Manitowoc WI to Ludington MI over the U.P. (and completing a full lake loop begun two years ago). 550 miles in 7 days. My low gear was 39/34, which I desperately regretted on my way out of Traverse City at 12%.
This shit is still a bit wild to me. Did at least one other story with pan shot. Midwest boy even with some east coast mountain riding can be in awe of the stuff out here. Capitol forest, and worst ‘venue’ for getting and full enduro of people but yolo i guess.
And yeah, sidewall puncture on pretty loamy trail. Wtf.
Took a good friend on their first bike camping trip Wednesday night! Went about 13 miles on Lower Deschutes before turning around and camping for the night. Average speed was about 6 mph which is about as close to perfect as you can get. Saw a pair of bald eagles, several hawks, and so many snakes! It was real pretty up there too. Had a great time catching up and alternately enjoying the relative quiet.
OHV was closed. Started at the top, which is what made it weird.
So we went in earlyish, and once at the top and found a good pullout to turn the van around, a 3 minute ride down to venue, we setup for breakfast.
Lovely day out today. Rode through two separate trail systems, Waimapihi and Makara to hook into the Skyline trail system. So many people out walking and riding. A rare still Wellington day.
Did some gravel with friends. This place is rideable from their door. There was some hike-a-bike that we had to hike right back out of because the road/trail disappeared
