it wouldn't be tarck without a dyno thread

except for the new CR2032s that have the nasty coating to try and keep kids from ingesting them, which also makes them not work as well for bike stuff.

i bought one of them round boy batteries at home depot the other day. the packaging was nearly impossible to penetrate. they had locked the battery inside of a little plastic shell that was so tight to the battery that i could barely open it with a knife.

Its been years since I bought/built a dyno system
what’s the best deal in getting a 700c dyno wheel rolling with minimal effort? probably just buying one from Braden/Outpost? what’s the light to buy? never felt like I needed more than IQ-XS for city riding

I have an IQ-X and two little top light rears hooked to an sp hub that have been hands off for 4 years

pretty sure I didn’t pay $200 for the headlight

Amazon sells the IQ-XS from Germany. I’ve seen it around $50, but also over $100. Looks like $64 now

That’s a solid price

I’m only able to see them listed for >$100

Idk it was $64.79 earlier. The price bounces around on them. AI demand pricing?

If you are in QR world, I bought a dynamo wheel from these guys years and years ago. They were using Sanyo hubs back then but now use Shimano. I’ve got like 10,000 miles on that wheel, maybe my best bang for buck bike purchase

I bought one of those a while ago and now seems like the stand light on my IQ-XS has died. This is the third light I’ve had the stand light die on. The others were an IQ-X and a CYO Premium. Do we think that the small wheel spinning extra fast is overcharging the stand light battery and causing it to burn out?

I bought the sp I have because it was lighter and cheaper. it’s optimized for small wheels and is not as bright on the 26" but I never ride it where there aren’t streetlights.

I’m here to finally admit openly that my son hub and beacon are overkill for my use case, as many others have said before.

Sanyo dynamo goes brrrrr

(though I don’t know if you can even buy them in the US/anywhere anymore lol)

Is it bikepacking compatible?

That was my original build intent, but so far I haven’t done much night riding while bikepacking and I’m not sure I carry enough speed to employ the charging aspect enough. Tbh, upgrading my gear has made me far less battery anxious as well. My Fenix headlamp lasts up to 147h on low for setting up camp, the coros duro almost matches use charge via solar since I use such limited functions on it, the inreach only consumed 10% of battery over 3 days of breadcrumbing on my last trip, and my phone on airplane mode only used for some music and photos held to 37% over that time as well. It seems like a battery bank would be lighter and not carry the rolling resistance of a dynamo hub, and I could just recharge it when I stop to smell the flowers at lunch stops etc since I use bikepacking as an escape and not racing or time trialing.

I’m in the process of building a regular front wheel to swap and test this theory on my next trip. Will just keep this wheel in the parts bin for inevitable future dithering.

Ive been thinking similarly. The Coros lasts for ever. A 20 mah power bank weighs nothing and flight mode on phone. Lighting is so efficient. Still dont have a Coros Dura tho. Came close this year but thought how it would make all my existing gps redundant! Plus 500 $$$$

I built up the plus wheel for my bikepacking bike with a dyno. Never actually hooked it up to anything. I just don’t tour long enough that a power bank doesn’t cut it, and for short trips I take a headlight that has a USB 3 powerbank mode.

Yeah quite a few times now I just use my dyno kit cos it cost so much. Plus free visibility during the day with the front light and rear flashers. The other issue is that is 12mm x 100 so I can only really use it with a QR adaptor or 12 to 15 adaptor with spacers for a 15 x 100 fork, my next most common dead-end fork standard.

I’ve got a dyno setup on my commuter, and for that use case I think it makes sense. Just leave on fenders and ride on - there’s enough other shit to remember to put in your pannier without having to make sure lights are charged. For hobby bike setting, the new 10K battery banks from Nitecore/Flextail have a capacity vs weight vs cost value that changes the math. Add in the Detour lamp with a decent cut-off lens and pass-through charging and I can’t see buying another dyno.

basically i think dynamos make the most sense for any bike that you want to regularly ride straight out of your home without thinking about it, and make much less sense for a bike that’s mostly going to get packed up / transported elsewhere in order to ride.
