I’m not sure what you’re trying to do but if you’re still pedaling fine, what’s the problem?
Training to increase HR at a certain power isn’t really a thing. You’re usually training to keep it down…
I don’t know that I’ve seen a name for it but I have experienced the same phenomenon when either overtrained or underfed
Without power vs HR data it’d be hard to say. I’d wager both overtrained and underfed at the 10hr mark.
Pro riders train for what is called fatigue resistance by doing threshold work after 2500+ kJ being expended.
When I experience it, it’s usually because my fueling wasn’t done right. Sometimes my gut will just stop processing calories, then I go into a low power mode. I can turn the pedals, but I have no jump and generally feel like garbage.
I realized why I stopped using TrainingPeaks for building workouts and started doing it on my own. The workouts that come out of TP use hard targets based on your FTHR/FTP instead of percentages. This works until you retest and have to re-export all your workouts.
The workaround I found is to use TP to generate the workout FIT, but then use the FIT CVS Tool to convert the file to something I can edit. I then do a search/replace for the targets and replace them with a percentage. The FIT standard uses anything > 1000 for targets and < 1000 for percentage. Then the FIT CVS Tool can convert it back to the binary FIT file.
I briefly toyed with the SDK examples, before I remembered that I still need to work on the Unknown Pulsars GIMP plugin.
For me it was them making you pay each time you moved your software from one PC to another, because you upgraded your PC.
You’re thinking of WKO, I believe.
Also, what the hell, creating simple workouts should be easy. I can’t believe this hasn’t been solved.
For WKO? Yeah, I’ve heard that. I’ve used Golden Cheetah since I first started with power. You can use the free version of TrainingPeaks to make workouts for any past day, still.
I’ve been getting by with spreadsheets that I can generate Google Calendar events and pre-made workouts on my headunit.
@halbritt oh yeah. I am confused, altho it wasnt WKO when I used it, it was Cycling Peaks, now I think about it, i think just the workout files were called *.wko, I guess 2005 was a while ago now !
Oh yeah, it’s way less heinous now.
it’s not really an issue at all for the normal usecase. they’re expecting you to assign workouts (or have them assigned to you) on a calendar, in which case you can auto-export workouts onto your device the week off and your ftp is never out of date.
the reasoning for the hard programmed targets is that the workouts are usually set as power zones, but power zones can vary based on device capability, so sending them in watts is better than in power zones (as you might have 6 zones on your device and 7 in training peaks, thus making “zone 5.8-5.9” completely different in both devices).
i don’t think it’s unreasonable to do it this way. today’s plan does the same (and thus also stages link). but it does make it difficult to download and “bank” workouts without using some kind of calendar in the same system.
there’s also the issue of various platforms all using their own workout formats, i.e. zwift’s .zwo, trainer road using .mrc, etc, which is kind of dumb… but nearly all the platforms you would use to do the workout have some kind of inter-platform syncing method that would push your workouts to and from without the need to manually download them. when i used zwift pretty regularly, i just had to load my workouts on a training calendar and they were synced into zwift automatically to just grab one up… zwo does not use hard targets though - not sure if its using % or power zone.
FWIW - .MRC is easily editable in a text editor and is what trainer road uses. probaby the easiest workout file type to use. does exactly what @yonderboy describes - uses % of ftp as target. but only trainer road and a few other apps support it.
I’m not complaining about the hard target vs. % of FTP so much as the fact that it’s just hard to create a simple workout. Admittedly, I haven’t tried that hard, but I have attempted to do it in TrainingPeaks, TR, Zwift, etc.
Maybe I’ll edit some MRC files or something.
Ah, I’ve never found this to be that hard. I used to make them in Garmin connect and sometimes trainer road, now I make them in stages link. Never actually used training peaks. Garmin connect’s interface was super easy. The downside being that those files seemed to only work on Garmin devices, despite being .fit.
The trainer road workout builder was the worst of the bunch IME, but it might have gotten better, it’s verb a few years.
There was a group of us in the Wahoo Google Group that figured out how to do the Wahoo plan files. The idea was to bridge the gap between non-integrated workout plans and scripted workouts on the bike. That’s been my work flow for a about 5 years. When I switched over to the Dash, I needed to fill that gap again.
One of the ErgDB developers took that and ran with another subscription-based site, called Trainerday. That just kinda proves that the industry as a whole is moving towards a fully-integrated system. Self-coached athletes are pretty sparse; I’m not surprised there aren’t more tools out there for building workouts. I’m only doing this as a hobby, especially since I’m not winning any national championships any time soon.
You’re probably right and I’m probably just suffering from laziness.
Optimally I spend 5m dreaming up a workout and somehow ship that to my Wahoo Bolt. Bonus points if it can put the trainer in erg mode.
I bet that with a little bit of focused research and effort, I can get it figured out.
While I find this to be weird, it explains the success of Trainer Road.
I tried all of them briefly and none of them do what I want.
What was your workflow like for Wahoo plan files?
I have a Friel ATP spreadsheet that I use to generate CSV files to import my daily workouts into Google Calendar. The workouts are pretty standard, but they are all based on %FTP. Then I just load the workout for the day on the head unit. The finished workout goes into Golden Cheetah. Before the Google Calendar integration was broken, I could upload the final workout details from Golden Cheetah to the calendar for logging.
I have about 30 workouts for the Wahoo right now. After my experimentation with the FIT files, I’m up to 11 for the Dash. I’ll keep building them as needed. Once Golden Cheetah gets the Plan feature into the beta, I’ll probably start moving my ATP over to that.
I’ve got a referral for a free month of TrainerRoad if anyone wants to play around and test it out. DM me with an email address and i’ll invite you.
I’m totally new to power training (really any structured cycling training), so take that into account, but thus far happy with it. After selecting a plan based upon available time and goals it just tells me which workouts to do each week, which is precisely what I wanted right now.
The coach instructions during the workout are a nice touch. So far they incorporate pedaling drills into the workout, but for some reason they are only text cues? I’ve tried a few devices and never gotten any sound for the instructions. Reading text on a screen kind of sucks.
There is also a whole catalog of individual workouts to choose from that you can ship to your Wahoo if you know what you want and are just looking for variety.
Turns out making a workout in Training Peaks is simple. Did that.
I don’t know where else to put this, but I’ve partnered up with Saris and Machines for Freedom to promote a giveaway for a big indoor cycling package.
Machines for Freedom makes women’s gear, so if you win, you have to give that to @jordanpattern or @amy (or not, whatever) but the trainer and other gear is really sweet too.
