Painting your Bike!

I want to toss you into a wood chipper[/quote]

k, well welcome to my ignore list.

I have a good friend who works in an auto body shop, he’ll probably do it for a case of beer and cost of paint. I’ll call him tonight.

Isn’t it a bit silly to spend 200$ painting a forty dollar frame?

It’s all about the prep and the quality of paint. If you paint it with a $2.99 can of krylon without preping it properly it will look like shit after a few months. If you follow the steps I outlined above, you can get really good, durable results. It’s gonna take some time and cost more than 20 bucks, but it can be done.

Here’s another thing you might try for a cheap-o paint job. Do all the sanding and prep yourself. Then see if you can find a friendly autobody guy that will just hit it with whatever color the car he’s painting is. My father in law can do this for free despite the fact that his boss is a total nazi. (he can’t even use the paint booth to paint his own car).

watch your back little fat boy

exgirl bike is holding up fine and my red conversion held up pretty well.

kemmers method sounds awesome and i’d totally do that, but here’s what i did with mine:

took down to bare metal with stripper and wire brush on a drill
shot filler primer
sand with 320 grit
then sealer primer
sand with 600 grit
thin coats of paint
thin coats of clear
wetsand with 1000 grit
buff
wax

i let it cure for a week between the color, clear, and wetsand/buff so the whole job took like a month.

like kemmer mentioned, using new lint free cloths when removing dust and whatnot is key.
with spray can jobs it really only chips when you lay on too many coats.

i used a microphone stand stuck up the seat tube to suspend the frame. it was nice because i could spin it around.

Agreed with kemmer. I’ve painted several things on my own which in fact have come out to be frigging awesome. It’s all about prep. If you don’t prep correctly, the job will look like shit.

thank you john!

also, if i do this myself, i should probably find someplace to paint that isn’t my house. with 4 cats the lint free cloth will never get all the hairs that will continually creep onto the frame.

and yes, it is a cheap frame, but i am excited about finally getting a mixte that fits me. i am a tallish girl and all mixtes are 48…

oh, also, thank you kemmer and halbrit for your recommendations! this is really great guys!

i won’t antagonize pirate. he is a nice boy.

Daft Monk made a good thread about painting a bike. Here’s a link.

I used a few tips in it to paint a bike recently. Haven’t ridden it yet so I’m unsure how it’ll hold up but I figured I’d try it this way (the cheap & fun way) and see how it went. I can always get it pro painted next time if it doesn’t last long.

That’s a great thread. The only thing I would add is that it’s important to always use lint free rags. Also, he says you can use any old degreaser but you really need to make sure it’s something that wont leave a residue.

that is what i am kinda thinking. i think it would be really fun to sand it and paint it. if it doesnt work out, i can get it pro painted, i just like the idea of really working on it myself. since nate does most of my bike work (and i let him since he has a far broader knowledge than i), i really want to do something more intimate with my bike. yes, intimate.
