I think it’s the kinda riding that is in your backyard that dictates the kinda bike thats gonna get you to ride more. Do you live near more road or off road?

its all road with a very small bit of levee gravgrav and singletrack. its really a job for 35mm tires.

it ends up being much more urban than anything country.
you may foldsy arms me if you must, but ive grown to see a sscx bike as about the least fun anyone can have on a bicycle, regardless of environment. atmo.

and really the so-ez would probably end up feeling like a sscx bike because im not sure i want to return to fixed.

They blow up a little smaller than 2.35” but in my case (a 2005 29er) this is a feature not a bug.

do you enjoy road biking by yourself?
if yes - then sure
if no -
do you enjoy road biking with others?
if yes - then you definitely want a road bike to ride with other roadies because the wrong tires slow you down.
if no
then why are you considering a road bike?
gotta figure out what sparks joy and build the bike around it, but don’t build a bike thinking the joy will come after you’ve spent all the money.

See here’s the problem. Going on rides where I smoke weed and eat tinned fish and cured meats is what sparks joy. And I’ve already built two bikes around those joys.
No to all of your other questions.
I guess I just want a bike for the sole reason of exercise by myself. But I think I know where this is going so no road bike for me.

I rode some uphill in Portland, hated it, put my bike up on CL the day I got home.

I would buy complete if it was a road bike because I understand them less than other bikes.

I love my comparatively fat-tired road bikes, I’ve had a 1st Gen Santa Cruz stigmata, Milwaukee road something, open up, Ron’s cr-1.
I know I could do a lot on 28s, I have, it sucked and I was younger, this is way nicer. They’re all somewhere between 35 and 40mm tire-wise.
I guess the value proposition lies in where you live, for me it lets me put up with a bunch of shoulder to ride some nice seasonal highways or other double track washboard fun.
I’m underbiked in Iceland a lot on the stigmata, I would be better off on some xc flat-bar crotch-rocket.
