Randonneurs (randos), use metric for distances; it'll make them feel like a longer ride: rando chat‽
I quit Zwift for Xert a couple weeks ago. Do you have questions or just looking for your people?
I think a tarck Zwift-up would be pretty fun!
i am new to the world of online cycling. having a group of IRIL (in real internet life) buds to ride with would be sick. i know zwift because it’s the household name.
i got out of fitness-focused cycling in like 2015 and my only interest in this is exercise for mental health and not starting all the way from scratch in the spring. the roads out here are excellent and my radius is limited atm due to being woefully out of shape
open to any and all info y’all got!
Watch Dylan Johnson on YouTube. Start with the what’s wrong with Zwift workouts video. Good luck and see you in the training with power thread
thanks dawg. right now im saying i just wanna pretend to ride bikes over the winter instead of not even pretending, but we’ll see. either way you can quote me now when i say ill be really annoyed if this leads to me needing to buy a power meter for riding bikes outside
Yea you could go there and watch that or we can goof around and ride bikes through a volcano just for funsies
yeah im leaning towards that. that video is mostly shitting on their trainings (which, having worked at a shop that did a lot of coaching and training do look like hogbollocks) so yeah i’ll probably start with riding around a volcano for funsies
how do I even share my Zwift user name or whatever? can I look people up based on emails or something?
This is exactly what happened to me. Considered getting power pedals for the Katu
. Does it even count without heart rate and power data?
its possible that i may have never been on a bike except for when my bike was on a computrainer.
I broke my foot in high school in a dramatic fashion and to this day I cannot run more than a few miles before it just becomes a stone. This is actually the reason I got into cycling. I was all set to be a collegiate soccer boi and then I broke my foot.
I did buy the kickr core from REI though. It was sold out of the largest/best LBS so I sprung on it while I could before they all sell out in January again.
fine fine in your case just take up bobsledding
hey man, my feet are fine and I can’t run more than a few miles either
Can this be the rando accountability thread?
Wine country 100k
First event in 2+years. I am very slow and carrying a lot more weight.
There was a 100 and 200 event, basically the same course - one with a further excursion south.
Start time was 8 am and I wasn’t sure how long it would take me to get from my house to the start so I left 30min earlier than the drive actually takes and I arrived 30min early.
When I got there there was one other guy in the parking lot noodling around preparing his bike and I just sat flipping through my phone and drinking coffee and he approaches the passenger side, mask on, so I pop out and we talk over the car
He starts to kind of ramble but the long and short of it is he left his water bottles at home and he signed up for the 200. I had packed 3 bottles because I have no idea why so I handed one over. “When do you think you’ll finish?”
“Bro there is no way I’m finishing this before noon but I plan to be at the rest of the events this year”
“Oh ok”
So people start showing up, lots of familiar faces in masks, everyone had good mask and space etiquette- I’m really pleased. I’m catching up with folks I haven’t seen in a couple years and the Instagram team shows up and parks at the far end of the lot, presumably to tiktok and duckface but who knows
(Placeholder for guy that promoted pbp “riding time”.jpg) plus a black/pink Rapha conti? Frame and some other dudes on bikes with nice paint jobs. We don’t see them until later.
This apbray + me
Right before the start 7:59 the RBA says “do I have everyone’s waiver? This doesn’t look like 20?” And I said “there’s some dudes over there” (points at instabros) and she says “is that (my name IRL, I haven’t seen him yet)” and I say “hi RBA name, happy new year.” Then, in front of everyone, she clearly walks over and says to me in a half hushed voice only the people around me can hear “are you going to ride your bike this year?” To which I laughed and a couple others giggled “I’m gonna try.”
Man, what a perfect weather day, if it wasn’t for my out of shape ass this would have been great. Like 40-55 degrees, barely a raindrop and mostly sun. Lots of log trucks and sawdust on the land we were riding through. I’ve always thought Oregon is America’s France and I have yet to hear otherwise. Oregon’s wine country is rolling hills with vine and small forests of trees and farms of stock, it’s the cedar/pine/fir+animal shit and fertilizer smell.
I’m talking to a rando I’ve never met before - he’s French by way of Midwest and Texas and has been commuting and teleworking for the last 5 years in Austin. Well, as is the norm with new randos in new clubs, we talk about our rando histories - big rides, big events, etc - he goes on to say that he didn’t ride pbp in 2019 but served as support for a team of 5 that attempted a charly miller with 2 successful. I straight up asked - how old were they and what was the training regimen.
So most of us are still together at about 25km and we start to get into the bigger lil hills. The group slows, does the 1-2-3-4 hill spread and team Instagram passes everyone on the left in a steady paceline. One guy said something nice about my bike so I’m going to reserve all my hate spewage until it’s actually warranted but I digress. So, they pass everybody but this portion of the route is like a turnaround and
My ass is dropped
I lose everybody
Until I see the fast randos after the turnaround
And then team Instagram
I truly hope that the 4-5 dudes on a cannondale cross bike with no fenders, a $$$$ built crust, volagi, custom built or cobbled bikes just rode at a more spirited clip and that it wasn’t like a flat or something. That was the last I saw of either group
I’m now riding with the slowest dumbest version of myself until a new bike friend pops up and starts a conversation. New bike pal is new to rando but has done a few long distance rides, has some time and wants to get into it. Awesome. Dude is about my size, is riding a gravel bike and has expressed interest in gravel riding. Awesome. Basically we ride together until the end of the route and laugh about stuff
hey good job
There’s an instagram team?
I dunno but these dudes were definitely more insta than any of the old randos
$50 idea - set up a cute photobooth along the route and charge for use
