Randonneurs (randos), use metric for distances; it'll make them feel like a longer ride: rando chat‽

31 people registered for tomorrow morning’s 300K

Aiming for 13-ish hrs ride time, only 4 intermediate controls so this should be a fast one

Ok I’ll try a short recap:

All 31 people showed up to start, a couple randoey-style bikes but mostly roadies with aero extensions, plus two hardmen on single-speeds.

The pace immediately blew up, got into the lead group but quickly realized that pushing 20mph was not smart. I would get dropped and cruise for a bit, tacking onto passing weekend warrior groups for a bit before getting dropped again, up til I hit the coast. From there I was solo for the rest of the ride.

At Huntington Beach the route turned onto the San Gabriel River Trail, a couple dozen miles slogging up into the foothills near Duarte.

I started to question my decisions until the route pointed downhill again, and enjoyed a Coke-and-Celsius fueled push back down to Long Beach.

I think this is where I started forgetting to eat. Getting back into Huntington, the cue sheet diverged just a little bit from the GPS track but enough to confuse. A very strong tailwind and more 20mph pacing through Newport Beach helped assuage the grumps for a time until Irvine.

The sun started setting and my right knee started complaining just as the last climbs started, and grunting up punchy pitches on 50mph suburb avenues put me in the dark place. An evening donut from the penultimate control at Dunkies helped a little.

The last 30km or so went up the same false-flat bike path that I was speeding down at the start. I saw blinky red lights ahead of me, and my brain wanted to catch, but the energy just wasn’t there. It was a very slow roll back into Corona and the last control.

Obviously I have opinions
All bikes are rando bikes
A rando bike doesn’t mean it has to have integrated everything and a front bag - this is a constructeur style rando bike

Rode 300 yesterday
Slowest dumbest and am really slow now since I have let my bike muscles atrophy
Great day for groundscores

I’m tired and everything is sore
But my Bp is down 30 points on both

Feeling a little nervous about my first 600k, about a month out.

I’ve got lighting almost sorted now, and a food plan. Still need to buy some sun protection for arms and legs. Just haven’t been riding as much as I’d hoped to with the recent move. But now, I have the next few weekends completely free and plan to do some longer rides this month, and can bike to work 2 or 3 days a week.

I’m planning to do a 200k shakeout next Saturday and can log more boring flat bike path miles as needed - I have an 85 mile loop almost entirely on riverside paths with about 1500 feet of elevation. Trying to get into a light routine of kettlebell and bodyweight exercise for arms and shoulders/upper back. Not sure what else I should be doing.

Pearl Izumi arm skins and leg skins are a favorite. Pata capilene neck tube bc I hate sunscreen. Big fugn oakleys and a cycling cap.

Where are you overnighting? Hotel or car? Do you get a drop bag?

You have 40 hours for a 600, don’t go out too hot, remember to eat more and drink some. A hot meal sit down is an energy and morale boost.

If you are like me and get a negative voice in your head, tell that negative they can fuck off because you are really here and really outside living your best life doing something you love.

All you have to do is roll across the line at 39:59.99 and you’ve done it. I’m here cheering you on and I’m sure anybody who knows you is too. If you want my number to call and give you a pep talk on route I can do that. Or txt messages. Whatever you can do it, just do it. The hardest part is putting on the stretchy pants.
