Woosie.
My gfs parents got me a down jacket for Christmas.
Game. Changer.
Mix that with a layer of wool and you’ve got two animals working for you. It’s been rather pleasant out so far, but it’s supposed to be close to 0F later this week, so we’ll see how well it holds up to those temps, but so far it’s been light and comfy.
Okay, what do you cold weather fuckers wear on your feet? I have flat pedals on the POS I have to ride here, so I’ve been layering socks under my chuck taylors and then covering with a light shoe cover. I know that’s definitely insufficient, but I’m having to run what I brung, so ayhsmb, or something. Perhaps unsurprisingly, my feet are the coldest part of me, and I haven’t been able to stay out for more than an hour and a half. Yesterday I thought I could prevent frozen feet by putting those handwarmer packets in my shoes, but it didn’t seem to help at all.
Otherwise, it’s been a lot warmer than it could be, so at least I’m not having to put on a parka to ride. I’ve been okay with knickers + tights, two baselayers + jersey + armwarmers + Gore jacket, and heavy duty mittens. Oh, and fleece cap over cycling cap.
I met a guy last night who runs a bike shop here in town and rides through the winter. I asked him about footwear, hoping for a balleur shoe cover recommendation, and he said he wears sandals with three pairs of socks through most of the Edmonton winter. WTMFH.
Haven’t seen another lady on a bike, but I’ve seen some dudes. Seems to be an even split between total freds on 90s mtbs who are bigtime commuters, and slightly racier-looking freds on cross bikes who refuse to acknowledge me when we pass each other. I did see one nice dude on a Ridley, who said a really surprised, “hello there!” to me as I approached him.
Are you wearing wool socks, 'cause you shouldn’t be layering those.
And if you’re not wearing wool socks, you shouldn’t be layering those either, and you should be wearing some fucking wool socks FFS
Boots with flat pedals works good. Stop layering because you’re just cutting off your circulation and making your feet colder
Plastic bags over wool socks are a cheap and easy wind breaker also keep your feet dryer. Super ghetto but pretty effective.
Dude, I know how layering works! I don’t wear wool, so no wool socks. I have two thin pairs of socks, and I’m careful not to cut off circulation. Only boots I have access to here are too clunky to ride in for more than a short time, which defeats the purpose of wearing them.
Doubling up on thin socks is some grandmaSolBrothers shit
Get some winter fleece socks if you don’t do wool. It’s not going to be as good but it’s probably your second best option. The crucial thing is proper socks designed for winter though. Your socks are your insulation, if you don’t insulate properly, you’ll be uncomfortable.
Also seconding the plastic bags-over socks. Or at least something to stop the wind coming through your shoes.
Fleece socks are a good idea. I was concerning myself with trying to prevent cutting off circulation, and apparently that caused my brain to think I should just layer my thinner socks. Pretty derp.
As for wind, that’s not a problem, since I have the shoe covers. Water is similarly not a problem, since it’s too cold for it to be an issue. What I’d like, but probably won’t get before I leave, are thicker shoe covers that will provide insulation as well as wind and water protection.

Actually LOLd.
I wear Defeet Woolie Boolie (I know, no wool, but this is what I wear) and some Pearl Izumi shoe covers for the coldest days, and that works well.
Can you find some slightly less clunky boots used somewhere for cheap. Alaskan hightops, ie sorels with the tops cut off, worked good for me.
Call me a dipshit for his one but after it gets below a certain temp I never stop wiggling my toes and shifting my feet around to keep blood flowing.
.
I’m gonna go ahead and be the voice of woosies everywhere: if you’re going an hour and a half in sub freezing temperatures, you’re doing great.
also chucks is pretty much the ideal footwear for absolutely nothing.
chuck taylor: the last white guy cool enough to get his own basketball shoe
Larry Bird had a signature pair of Converse Cons.
Larry Bird did not get anything in life by being cool enough
Shut it, fake Coleman.
