Shimano oval chain?

Anyone heard of these: http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main … ts_id=5976

Looks interesting visually and the price isn’t bad. Are they decent chains?

Chris

I have seen them come stock on hybrids, cruisers, and bikes from REI. that is about it. nothing wrong with a normal looking chain.

(see how much fancier than you I am? see?)

I’ll have to take a gander at the bikes in our REI. I normally don’t pay them any attention, so I missed this chain if it was there.

Nothing wrong with an ordinary chain, but this one looks neat. Unless it isn’t suitable for FG use, it is another way to personalize your bike.

Chris

Looks pretty classy in the photo. I wonder how it looks in practice.

Does look nice but probably can’t deal with my half link or master link. That and it’d probably just look dumb.

Why do you use a halflink?

well, it is pictured on a fg cog and 1/8…

There can only be one danger around these here parts…

That chain is weird.

i think it’s some form of joke.

Professor Jim, PhD.

They were originally for the coasting series that had automatic shifting. I’ve got the feeling that if the chains are out on the market now then that means the coasting bikes didn’t do as well as they thought they would. I sold a few back in 2007, but they were really impractical anywhere that there were and hills because they wouldn’t shift under load. And trying to tell someone that they have to use the proper technique to ride a bike that they’re only buying so that they don’t have to learn any technique to ride (i.e. people too lazy to learn how to shift gears) was difficult.

Good info. Thanks.

Chris (oops)

What problem were they supposed to solve? The auto shift somehow worked better with this design?
