Sun CR18

Any opinions/experience on this rim?

Cheap/kinda wide/somewhat heavy for what they are. Available in 26/27/700c. People use them on tourers and tandems and you’ll see them on super duper cheap mountain bikes sometimes. Mountain bike community dislikes them but tourers think they’re alright.

Thats about what ive gathered on the web. Thanks

i have a rear one, laced to a formula.

nice low profile, cheap, heavy, shiny rim.

i got it off CL in a package deal with a bontrager select front. $60 for the pair, which i can’t complain about, even though that means:

-low flange front, high flange rear
-deep front rim, box rear rim
-black rim/hub/spokes in front, silver in rear
-20 spokes in front, 32 in rear

mismatched as fuck

had them on my old conversion is 27"… pretty useless. i didn’t know enough at the time to really tell that much or complain, even.

theres a suzue promax laced to one on CL here now. i guess thats an indicator that its a decent enough rim?

i had them on my 27" conversion. worked well, never went out of true.

i have the 700c’s on my conversion and haven’t had any problems with them. plus they look sweet.

They’re legit. Nothing special, but there’s definitely nothing wrong with them.

go big or go home.

what?

i got my rear all cleaned up and shiny

now i want to lace a matching front

whos got a cheap 32h front? formula or something close…

velo orange has the rims for like 30 bones each

nice i seen em in various internets for that price, hard to beat

i just need a tarcker to come through with a hububub

Heavy compared to what? (I’m not trying to be a dick, i’m actually curious) VO says they are 460 grams, less than Open Pros.

As for the width, I was looking for rims in that width for a long time. At 22.5 mm, it fills the gap between 19mm road racing rims and fatass 24mm touring rims that can take tires only as small as a 28. This size rim is pretty hard to find and it’s nice to see someone making them. It’s a nice bonus that the rim also is in the very hard to find category of retro style, high polished box rim.

I almost used them when I wanted a wheelset that looked shiny, performed ok, but wasn’t expensive for use on my beater bike. At the last minute I ended up going with the narrower box section Sun M13 II. I think the consensus is both models are a decent wheel, nothing to write home about, but nothing that’s going to break the bank either. The worst I have heard is that they are hard to get perfectly round if you are building yourself, and that they are a little soft, but I haven’t noticed anything off-putting. I think I’d get the CR18 specifically if you’re looking for something wider like that, or if you want that polished look without shelling out for old Mavics (which I just ended up doing…ouch.)

I weighed Open Pro CD’s out to the 440g range. I think the CD’s are supposed to weigh ever so slightly more than reg OP’s because of the hard anodizing but I really have no idea on that one.

i just have to gloat a bit… my LBS has a basement full of sweet nos stuff that they are cleaning out.

I hate you. Not even going to disclose what I just paid for some used MA2s on eBay.

I’m justifying it since I never see them for sale, NOS or otherwise, and it was either miraculously find these or give in and get some Open Pros I’d hate anyway.
