You are stepping into an argument far larger than enough to be dealt with by a paragraph or two. The forum isn’t completely making fun of tarck, simply talking about its existence in both positive and negative lights. You have to respect other peoples’ rights to ride how they want. You can offer advice, but you can’t just call all of them dumbasses outright (except for tarckstar). There are certainly several strong riders on these boards that also happen to ride brakeless and know nothing of jackassery. There are also plenty of brake’d riders here who are jackass riders, I’m sure. For almost every member of this board, though, separating life from being “in bicycling” simply does not happen because they are inseparable. You have to recognize, though, that people have lives outside of cycling, if you are going somewhere, you may want to have different shoes. Maybe you don’t want to bring a pair of SiDi dominators to the beach along with another pair of shoes more suitable for the terrain, simply because your pack is full, maybe you want to ride 6 blocks on your LEADER to the coffee shop and wouldn’t want shoe wear or getting your laces caught on the way. Long story short: not everyone lives and rides like you, give us a fucking break if you think there was just one solution. ---

And hey, if you can stop a brakeless bike from 20mph to 0 in 10-12 yards, more power to you. Most of my rage toward fixed gear riders comes from seeing them prance past stop signs where that kind of thing is illegal and unsafe. I ride fixed a lot, and I stop at all the signs. But your notion of the multifaceted nature of bicycle riders is noted. ---

Are you seeing alot of Reindeer riding fixed? Because Reindeer “prance”, most cyclists I know roll. 3. Stopping at all the signs must be very time consuming, why not just stop at the ones that say “STOP”? ---

Rolling through stop signs because you can’t stop your brakeless bike is jackass. Rolling through stop signs because you’ve checked that no-one’s coming within a mile and you’re willing to break a law for not having to stop and accelerate at every street corner is regular cyclist wisdom. Regardless if you have brakes or not. Riding Vans even though you prefer SPD’s just because someone rides Vans on Youtube is jackass. Riding Vans because you don’t wanna wear your Sidi Dominators at a nightclub downtown is regular cyclist wisdom. Regardless if you prefer SPD’s or Vans. Not everyone is in cycling just for the sport bit of it. I also wanna go places. ---

The other day I rode my xtra (which has spd’s) to the grocery store in regular shoes (though not vans). I was also drunk at the time, so I guess the whole thing was pretty jackass. ---
