terrible brainforums-type thread, sorry: What crankset for tarckbiek

Need a new crankset for tarck (Kilo). Will get some track and some street use. Upgrading from ghetto Stronglight crankset and don’t want to spend a million dollars. Also don’t want blingy, and don’t want black (b/c racism).

Things I am considering:

Soma Hellyer
SRAM Omnium
Miche Advanced or Primato
Stronglight Track 2000

Go!

75’s?

SRAM Omnium because I like external bearings.

not really interested. bling factor + not a great value

Ive heard nothing but good things about the Omniums. They seem like they can be had for very reasonable prices.

The Soma Hellyers are the same as the Andel/Alien cranks for a much lower price. And the Primatos use 135 BCD, which is rather uncommon. I’m also looking for some cranks and I’ve narrowed it down to the Miche Advanced Track or the Truvativ Omnium, both of which can be had for under $200 on ebay with free shipping.

omniums.

Another vote for Omniums… they’re probably the best deal in track cranks right now for $$$ to performance. Years ago, that title belonged to Sugino 75’s until EAI kept jacking up the price.

Only thing about Omniums is the funny spider bolts that will need replacing if you want to run other brand chainrings.

bulletproof OOO OOOOOOO WHAT WHAT in DA HOUSE!!!

I’d love to hear from Braden on this topic. He was endorsing the SRAM courier, I believe. I like external BB cranks, but some are better than others in terms of how the NDS crankarm attaches. He seems to be the most knowledgeable on this topic.

This one. 130BCD rather than 144BCD permits smaller/cheaper/more common chainrings. Not as blingy as Omnium.

FYI:

thanks for all the good advices so far, gents. hoping Braden chimes in as well.

RD?

Heath has steered me away from the RD. I have a “repurposed” road double currently, and want to upgrade to a “real” track crankset.

eh, RD’s get a 45mm chainline. Maybe it’s insignificant, but I don’t like the idea of my chain perpetually being ready to drop. I had that happen while cranking hard on a BMX bike. Chain dropped, lost balance, bars twisted, and I went over the handlebars, ripping up every single article of clothing I was wearing, plus ruining a rather expensive watch. Moral of the horror story: you may spend more money in the long run.

Also, the new Andel cranks also come in an outboard BB model, though the price is similar to the Omniums on eBay.

looks like Ben’s has Andels for ~$110 – or are you talking about something newerish?

also, fuck gloss black. :frowning:

this is intriguing deal or no deal:

[quote]new low price! dura ace 7600 170mm track cranks & sugino Zen 47t ring. cranks- $130 (I will throw in a cheap jis taper bb if you need it) ring- $60 both- $180

i’m partial to the miche advanced cranks. never used em, but they look great and i have heard good things (so basically no useful information here).

buy some old 105/600 road cranks.
save lots of money :bear:

edit: by the looks of it, the sram courier is the best deal, but i personally like the look of the miche advanced most.

Or just get some BMX cranks. :bear: :bear: :bear: :bear:
profile makes a 46t

SRAM Omnium if you’re doing a lot of track riding since the stiffer crank and higher-quality, track-specific chainrings will serve you well there, but the SRAM Courier seems pretty cool as well, particularly if you’re going to be riding mostly on the road anyway. Seems like a contender for the spot that the RD holds in the market.
