Track Season 2009 Thread
Am I the only person that has seriously let their mileage lapse since the weather got gnarly? My training plan had me scheduled for a 2 hour Zone2 ride + a bunch of intervals, but I will probably do closer to 45 minutes with the intervals worked into the ride.

I’m not going to be as fast as I had hoped…
All I’ve been doing is riding at work so nothing too major for me. I think that shit just helps me maintain fitness but nothing else. Haven’t hit the gym in a couple weeks… I suck.

Yeah, I haven’t touched my bike, other that riding to work, since it started being dark at 4:00. I even have a whole new SRAM group on my roadie that I haven’t touched since I installed it. I’m definitely in a weather-related funk.

Sooooo

I signed up for the level 2 track classes starting on the 9th. I also just got some crazy rollers. I am getting a late start, but I’ll be way more ready this season, than last.

Anyone else gearing up?

I’m gonna be registering with a car sharing service pretty soon so me and a few buddies are gonna try hitting the track this summer. (it’s about 100k out of town)

Prolly just gonna use the same bike I work on except throw on some roadie bars and my Miche 502’s.

I’ve recently started bike messengering only four days a week and am already feeling stronger. I can’t wait to drop another day so I can start training!

Yeah, I did about 30 minutes on the rollers tonight. I did okay for it being the first time on them ever. I think I’m going to make a daily habit of this, and then when classes start I’ll be getting in way better shape. I might join the SD Velodrome association here and then I can access to the track whenever.

I started going to the gym to get some strength training in. I wish I had some rollers to do cardio on, the spinning machines here are wonky as fuck and not comfortable to sit on.

Riding a bike outside is far superior to rollers for cardio. Rollers are best for learning technique, form and getting your cadence up as high as you can go and then maintaining it to get that muscle memory developed. Good for recovery spins too. This is all concerning rollers w/o resistance by the way, the ones with resistance are a different story and arguably the best of all worlds but you’ll pay big for a set.

I’m still track training. Long tempo rides, weights 2x/weekly, long climbs, starting to race road races… no intervals yet though. I can’t wait until May and June.

There are ways around this. A combination of the following can help:

 • Start with smaller diameter rollers
 • Reduce your tire pressure
 • Throw a towel under the back roller

True but lowering the pressure will wear out your tires faster, especially if you’re a fine of putting in hours on them.

I haven’t tried the towel yet.

Or use a geared bike in the biggest gear.

My rollers have a resistance unit but I rarely use it, and even then I only use it on low. It’s just not the same as riding.

Yeah. I’m not substituting rollers for actual riding. Just working on form, balance and cadence.

Anyone have any advice for a crash “get ready to race sorta soon” training regimen? I was thinking of getting right into intervals. I’m really not sure other than just putting in miles which I seem to never have time for lately.

Do tempo rides for awhile, get your miles in then jump into intervals.

When are you starting racing?

Hey, how’d the first road race go?

Oh yeah, I forgot about this… full report please.

The racing starts in April. It’s not a super short time, but it’s not a lot of time either.

The track class starts up on March 9th.

I know someone who has a SDV membership and keys to the gate so I’m gonna call him up soon and see if I can join in their weekly training sessions.

Nice. I’d be really happy with 6th in my first race.

I just found out that the Ed Rudolph velodrome in Northbrook is an easy metra train ride and a two block bike ride away.
I will be frequenting it this summer.

I don’t even know when racing starts around here, but it’s not for a long fucking time.

Same here. The Bromont velodrome still has it’s 2008 calendar up on it’s website.
