The tire showed up today and it’s obviously a real Dugast, unless someone makes knock-off tubulars that weigh less than a fart and have a Dugast tread-pattern. It appears barely used. I’m not boasting, I’m just pointing out that it was exactly as I described and that you can get some killer deals on eBay. This tire is going onto my Zipp Eliminator tri-spoke.
^^^ Score!^^^
We should seriously just open a thread about where we boast about our good deals because between you on eBay and me at the bike co-op I’d say we’re killing it…
Anyone ride Vittoria Rallys? Sprinters are a bit out of the budget right now.
Gotta save that scrilla! Tubular tires ain’t nothin to go cheap on…
I have one on a front wheel that is used from time to time, probably has ~250 miles on it…
For a cheap training tire it works just fine, no complaints per say…it isn’t perfectly round though, sort of oblong. this isn’t noticeable when riding, but could be a concern. it also wore sort of fast on the edges, with the rubber receding towards the center of the tire a noticeable amount already.
but for a cheap tubular it isn’t bad. I might not trust it on super long distance rides without a spare, just out of paranoia
then ride clinchers.
they suck.
waste of time and money.
ride like shit and flat easily, i rode one. never again.
sprinter is the best cheap tire.
as long as you make a larger order it makes sense to get it from ribblecycles.co.uk
So, I got the rims! The Matrix one looks barely used, like it was laced and had a tire mounted to it for like one ride. Not even any brake wear. The campy omega one, however, has glue allll over it. Like, every single surface is covered in it. Removing it all will be fun times. Now I just need hubs…
Also, I love good eBay deals! This set of rims was a pretty good one I think. I also got a Profile carbon fork for the same bike just recently, and that was pretty cheap… but the seller shipped me the wrong thing (a set of 600-era 105 brifters). Imagine my surprise when the package came in the mail and it was a little USPS envelope instead of a box… I was mortified, hoped to god he didn’t like break the fork in thirds to fit it in the package. It’s annoying but mistakes are made. Not like it’s holding me back anyways… I need a lot more than just that fork to have a complete bike.
Bonechilling, on a whim I looked up that Dugast tire and saw that you also just recently got that Eliminator… for 26 BUX. Awesome.
So I’ve been thinkin’…
I’ve been looking at wheelsets for a 126 spaced rear hub with a 6-7 speed freewheel. The tubular sets go for nothing and nothing is what I like to pay, when I can.
I’m going to be building up a nice old road frame soon with 126 spacing, do you think tubulars would be ridiculous to try out? Obviously It would be more work. But it’s try out tubular or wait, save up, and get a nice rear wheel built for me(I’m thinking old Suntour Superbe or Sprint hub to OP).
I know I can search through decades of discussions about this, I’m just asking you guys.
well nice tubulars are expensive
so you won’t save much money
i went with tubulars on my road bike because i found some campy c record 8 speed wheels for 100 bucks
i had to buy three tires that cost more than the wheels
but they ride nice
Yeah, that’s my main reason for questioning them…
I don’t know if the cost will justify it for me right now. Clinchers are just easier.
Biketiresdirect is back in biz.
I’m in a similar boat as the other folks. I found a never-used FSA RD-800s carbon wheelset for crazy cheap on craigslist. All the related shit is pretty expensive though, as I’m finding out.
I guess I’ll keep running my clincher wheelset until I can afford the good stuff.
$45 for sprinters is a pretty good price.
