I had really wanted to ride in the “snow” today but settled for a family walk. Kinda glad I skipped the ride, I had wanted to ride on the bike trail but there is enough shade there that I bet there could be some gnarly slick spots, especially on the hills
It’s becoming clear that the city has no plan for clearing the PBLs.
They’ll probably be removed by executive order or something anyway.

i was surprised on wednesday, riding on the channel trail, that the same park district that turns the LFP into a salt mine has not touched the whole chicago section of that trail. Almost went down on ice in Legion park

The amount of salt on the Lakefront right now is out of control. There are whole stretches where my tires never touch the pavement, I’m just riding on an inch thick layer of packed salt.
anybody else find road salt sharper than any rough surface or gravel they’ve ever ridden over? I swear I only flat on salt crystals in the winter. maybe it’s just that my sealant is too cold to work.

-3 here yesterday morning when I biked in. Coldest that I’ve ridden in in a long time. I was thankful that my commute is only 0.25 tarck centuries.

Kind of a dud winter so far, at least in the valley, and most of the salt being put down is sticking around a lot longer than usual. My tires are looking more like a salt bagel.
There’s a bike lane in there somewhere!
It was even worse this morning and I was forced to be a vehicular cyclist on Clark Street with Roli in the box. Not a fan of that.

Gonna get some more “winter weather” here in Texas this week
I have really struggled to figure out how to dress in rides <40F this season. I think I have finally figured out that I need to overdress for the first half of a ride then take my puffy jacket/vest off for the second half, otherwise my digits go numb and never come back (in much warmer weather than I’d have guessed based on previous experience)
I usually go the other direction in that I start out a little cold and then warm up as I ride. I’m usually sweating within a couple miles.
Also, I can’t sing the praises of Barmitts loudly enough. Before I got barmitts, my hands would be frozen blocks of ice no matter what huge gloves I wore, but with barmitts I can wear my thin showers pass crosspoint gloves all winter long, have toasty tips and maintain my dexterity. My whole body stays warmer.

If I’m warm when I start my commute, I’ll be a sweaty mess by the time I’m halfway to work.

That’s how I used to do it but like I said, when I try that now I lose feeling in my fingers and toes before I warm up and then never get the feeling back after I warm up

I too suffer from easily frozen extremities.
I have a confession to make: when it’s down around zero, I stick little chemical heaters in my boots.
I actually do have a set of ATV bar mitts that I have used in Texas this year, I am getting them out again for the weather this week lol… They still didn’t work great for me this time around, but I think it’s because I left my arms too exposed. I’ve had to learn all this stuff all over again
