if i steal a part from the lady’s bike i have to replace it with something better. sometimes i buy parts for myself and she gives me that look and it winds up on her bike.
Aside from a short month or so on the Steamroller (taken apart right now, adn running ss these days anyway), I haven’t ridden fixed in about a year. I don’t really miss it all that much. Fixed is fun enough, but having just a fixed gear was boring. I’d still like to build a fixed beater one day, but I’m in no rush, having other bikes that are way more fun to ride.
I’ve been geared for the last year. Hopefully I’ll have a tarck built again by next weekend for a race here.
I commute on my fixed, mainly because I got tired of putting maintenance time into my geared bike that I was previously commuting on. I broke out my geared for a ride a little while back and it took me at least a mile or so to get used to having a free wheel again, it felt so odd.
My commute is only 7 miles so it’s just simpler to commute on the fixed vs the geared and the maintenance time involved.
I’ve noticed a shit ton of people here ride primarily geared / road bikes. I’ve looked into them, but I’m really enjoying riding road type riding fixed, just nowhere near as long distances.
Tim, an alleycat?
Most of my city riding = track bike
Most riding outside the city = geared bike
Sometimes I switch it up… but not too much.
i love riding fixed, but realized it’s not great for everything. i had a nice road bike, but that’s gone now. the one bike i’d always keep was a track bike. i’m looking for another sometime soon, but in the meantime i just bought a 1x9 and even though the frame’s a little small, i’m having fun riding it as a single speed (the freehub is fucked up). part of me thinks it’d be good to have a track, a road, and a ss…use the ss as a cruiser, perhaps.
The other night I went on a ride with a guy from a lbs and a few other people. The main dude who works at the lbs was leading us, and he was riding a track frame with a singlespeed freewheel, front and back brakes, and mustache bars. Another guy in the group was as well.
I have always primarily into road bikes. Fixed gears are just an occasional interest. At the moment, my single gear bike is on the coastie side of the hub.
barba’s hierarchy of bicycle interest:
Road bikes
Touring/randonneurs
Tarck
Mountain bikes
Haven’t had a fixed ride since the conversion got stolen. About to build up a fi Ed wheelset and I’m eyeing those long horizontal dropouts on the Allez. Conspiring to get a frame soon also, maybe a scramer or something. MTB is singlespeed and iride that a fair amount.
not riding right now, but now by choice.

fuck, sorry. that’s terrible.
+1 that is awful…
I did, but I sold it when I moved. Kind of regret it, I would really love another old steel Trek “sport touring” bike, fixed or geared. Now I’m moving again and I’m selling more bikes.
LOL this is a funny thread!
I rode my Cross Check as fixed for about a year, then converted it to geared. Immediately missed having a fixed gear and took the opportunity build up an Alien… oh man oh man, that’s now my favorite bike of all!
That said, I’ve got a small fleet of bikes and there’s very little overlap, so I pick the right tool for the job. Xtracycle for kiddie & cargo hauling, road bike when appropriate, geared Cross Check for something (kinda up in the air ATM), and the Alien for stooging around town. Should sell either the road bike or the Cross Check but haven’t done anything about it yet.
But anyways, I’m with Tarckatino, for around town riding the brakeless Alien is absolutely the most fun thing ever. For rides over 10 miles, though, something else is preferable.
i commute on a geared cross masi, and my torelli which was ss is getting gears. just need to work on the rear der, and it’s been 2 weeks so far. my fixed is sort of a cruiser. wide risers (officially measured at 3 1/4 fistfuls) fat tires(40’s) and 38-16. it’s soooo much fun
i love the people who have come out and pretty much told everyone they only rode fixed because it was trendy and now pretend to sit on a high horse because they ride anything but. As if their cycling palate has matured.
My tarck is coming together. four days ago I only had a frame and fork. As of today I have a record headset (courtesy of EJ), a record crank and BB (that could be traded for if I want to keep them) and several people promising to let me borrow wheels. Finally seeing why people justify the shitty fixie scene by saying “at least it gets people into riding bikes”. More people into bikes means more collections of spare parts to rifle through.
