These are just a bunch of stoned dudes who slowly ride a bike around college campuses
wait I can get paid for that?
Pretty sure the job description is “be outside on a bike”
Guy heard about the Shimano recall and was adamant that we submit a claim for a crank that exploded a few years ago.
He dropped off this:
tell him next time he should keep the big half
Did you call it in?
I’m fortunate to just be the guy that turns wrenches and laughs at things. Very much hoping the service manager submitted it.
I hope those came off a chain he was wearing around his neck
I wandered into the Portland Universal today to pick up some stuff. They have Cervelo and Santa Cruz now to add to the Cannondale stock. The shop is all blingy now.
I consistently have a bad experience at every shop I go to. At this point, i’m trying to figure out what i’m doing wrong. Expectations too high? unrealistic expectations around communication and quality? I really can’t figure it out. I feel like bike mechanics in the bay area market are paid a more decent wage than a lot of places, so maybe it’s just terrible luck or complicated problems?
What are you doing into shops for? Can you give us some examples?

Schedule service a week out for a brake bleed, 72 hours later, no work done. Why have an appointment system?
Shop couldn’t get my shifting right, bc they forgot to reinstall 10 on 11 speed spacer, blamed the white industries hub. took over a month for them to fix it, including multiple return visits.
Replaced brake rotors during service when I specified in writing that I did not want them replaced.
Shop where I spent 10 grand wouldnt write me an estimate for a new ($100) front wheel without doing a $100 estimate.
Bike shop that sold bike said I couldnt replace the saddle because there were no compatible ones. Any Specialized saddle would actually work.
Brought the bike in for its 200 mile free service, they didnt update the firmware so i had a battery issue that required another return visit.
Shop employee couldnt understand rack question, tried to install a rear rack on the front of my bike.
Cut steerer too short on fork TWICE, plus overcharged and reinstalled rack in a dangerous way, over three months to get it resolved.
That’s since 2020
Yeah, remember this is a service with no skill certification authority or industry standard of quality assurance.
You gotta start doing all your own work with that kinda shop luck.
i was doing them a favor! i had them write an insurance estimate and i felt bad just taking the estimate and not getting any work done, so i had them do the brake install and bleed. it’s a flat mount disc brake, it takes basically no time to install.
i just went in and apparently im being “bumped up the queue” which only raises the question of why i am not at the top after 4 entire days.
Today a former employee was in the shop working on their bike and trying to find the subtle rub in their brake to true the rotor. One of the current wrenches was standing nearby with a rotor and a rotor truing tool gently scraping the rotor to duplicate the noise. LOLs were had.
We also had packet pickup for a big ass race which between the volunteers and foot traffic made for a chaotic and fun vibe.
Right before I left I did a last minute complete drivetrain swap and di2 adjustment for a dude in to race from out of town. Found the fixing bolt on his crank arm was cracked and miraculously had a used replacement in the GXP bin.
Today was one of those days that makes it all worth it.
That same someone successfully made sous vied Salmon in the ultrasonic parts wash today.
ah, dishwasher fish
Bike in for a mid level service after a crash resulting in a broken collarbone.
Glad the service manager convinced the guy to have new bar tape put on even though it didn’t look too old:
Oh, and the fork is trashed from running a headset too loose. Probably a 1mm deep groove in the steer tube where the upper bearing centering ring sits.
