I honestly like the Alivio M4000 stuff I have. It’s not light, it’s not really pretty, but it’s solid. Swapped out the shifters for thumbies though (the trigger shifters work ok, just prefer indexed thumb shifters).
I’ll probably end up with a cheap 90s road frame at some point and try out the new 9s Sora stuff for kicksthink about Sora before doing something else.

so now there’s 3 ‘new’ style shimano rear road mechs and shakes and they shift 9, 10 & 11 speed.
does anyone know if the cable pull from the shakes varies or the mechs leverage ratio varies?
I’d wager it’s the shakes, be good to know how current tiagra and sora can interchange with 11sp and anything else.

Only reason I remotely miss my BG. A triple with barcons is pretty cool sometimes.
Went 53/39 11-28 with new group though coz vain.
So I’m building up a mtn bike for sup wife to use on the logging trails and dirt paths in the area. Some XTR dual control shifters came my way for free and just was wondering if they are decent enough. I was planning on using some microshift thumb shifters but these look weird and cool. What do I do?

When we were building ladybiek’s soma we used 10 speed road shifters and had to use a 9 speed mtb derangler. a 10 speed derangler wouldn’t have been compatible with the 10 speed road shifters, so I’m thinking it’s actually the derangler that has a different ratio.
i am not a bicycle scientist though, i might be wrong.

You are correct, 10s shimano mtb dangler/shifter are special and the other (older) stuff can mix and match.
Blakey is talking about something else - the latest gen sora R3000 and tiagra 4700.
They look like the 9000,6800, and 5800 but are 9s and 10s. He wants to know what the new cheap parts are compatible with. Something that no one seems to know.
Do the XTRs. They’ll work great and are fun oddball parts to use. Plus, free! It’s not necessary to use a rapid- rise dangler, but no reason not to and you might get a good deal on one.
I had a set of XTs and quite liked them.
Be sure to play with and set up both the lever reach and angle, really makes a difference in how nice they are to use.
i personally can’t stand those and would take thumbies any day of the week, but that was an opinion mainly formed under the assumption they’d be used for trail riding. might be fine for what you’re talking about

When I first saw them, that was my opinion too. The brake lever just looks flimsy. But free is good and if she likes that type of riding maybe we get something better. I was in the LBS the other day and was surprised at some of the spring sale prices on “S” brand mtn bikes. Makes me wonder why people bother to buy from walmart and shit but that is a whole other story in itself
I had a set of those a few years ago. I thought they were pretty awesome until I was bombing down some rocky hills on my rigid Stumpjumper and the damn things kept changing gears while I was trying to brake with the bike bouncing around underneath me. My wife wanted them and put em on her bike and never had a single problem.
I know people who totally rave about that stuff. It always looked bizzare to me. I do love the old uphill gardner rear mechs though. Seems more natural and more useful if shifting goes south.
