A lithium battery is its own accelerant and widely available.

folks, as much as I want to bathe my house in junkyard smoke for several days in addition to canadian wildfire smoke, I’m not sure arson is the best tactic here.

Arson forensics has always made sense to me when its in a wildland setting, with unidirectional spread from a point of ignition. Its incredible they can do it after a house fire to me.

To be perfectly clear, my advocating arson was entirely in jest.

My house burnt down when I was a teen. They explained they could pinpoint the start by the amount of burn; it burns the longest/most (flammability of the materials considered, of course). Ours didn’t include accelerants so they didn’t tell me anything about that, but I’d guess they cause more burn than expected.

Apparently the on-site investigation and determination of arson or not is mostly based on folklore. In contrast, the lab-based forensics to determine a particular accelerant source are quite detailed (analytical chemistry of petrochemicals and their combustion products is a well-trodden area of research). Or so says the AAAS:

Determining if a fire is accidental or due to arson is a process often plagued by poorly understood science, subjective judgments on the part of investigators and inadequately trained personnel, according to a new AAAS report on the quality of fire investigation in the United States.

one of the perks of working at a co-op is even the most normie motherfuckers there don’t question the weird boss who rides his bike to the store in some of the worst weather in North America

not surprising that arson determination is part of media-manufactured cop mythos. Like CSI crime lab stuff

The shoddiness of arson investigations was a big part of Cameron Todd Willingham’s failed appeals from Texas death row, iirc

Edit: here’s an article about it

There are just no words to adequately express my hatred of these modern trucks. People look at me like I’m crazy when I start talking about them and how dangerous and offensive they are.

“Black widow” is appropriate here - plenty of soccer moms in my town driving these abominations, liable to run over their spouses because they can’t see shit out of them.
