Don’t.
I know this gets easier as you have experiences like this
Have been there without a kid and I say you showed tremendous restraint
Damen and Foster.
But was the cyclist wearing a helmet?
This got me bad. I just moved back a half mile east of there, and bike through there a lot; never got scary vibes from this stretch of Damen. But every street’s scary when there’s .20 mfers out there doing whatever. No way to control for that, to ride defensively enough. I don’t get a thrill anymore, I’m just fuckin scared
had a friend killed in a motorcycle accident where the very drunk driver on the wrong side of the road hit him head on.
newspaper was sure to note that his motorcycle was “homemade” and that he wasn’t wearing a helmet.
our society will go to absolutely insane lengths to excuse and allow vehicular homicide.
What if we presumed every driver was guilty of killing someone with their car on each trip, and only by successfully completing the trip without doing so they were deemed innocent?
It’s because it makes everyone who drives feel guilty and defensive for their complicity.
I think the last time I almost got hit by a person on their phone I yelled the same thing. I didn’t have a kid and was not actually touched by the car but man is it infuriating when you see them looking at their goddamn phone.
I’ve been taking Lincoln from Lawrence to wells and back every day and I probably average one close call a day. Our drivers are getting worse
Agreed, it is an unfortunate boomer-esque opinion of mine that it just ain’t safe no mo. People think NYC is scary but the fact is you’d be hard pressed to travel over 20 mph on most streets and this is where I do most of my on pavement cycling. Fukka riding on the shoulder of 55 mph roads or whatever.
That’s a pretty nice ride now that the construction in Lincoln Park is finished.
I’m happy to report that both my commutes were uneventful today and that it looks like the city is planning to install sheltered bike lanes southbound on Clark Street from Montrose to at least the Southport fork, maybe all the way to Irving Park. Who knows if the project will ever get past the spray paint on asphalt phase, but here’s hoping!
Bike lanes are a priority of every level of local government rn. It’s good stuff. Let’s get rid of some cars.
tbh most of the 55 mph roads in broome county are pretty chill. i’ve had a shockingly low number of close calls. hell most calls here are downright respectful
I don’t feel too weird about riding in town but yeah this is why I don’t ride my road bike any more. I can’t even imagine driving less than an hour to find a place to ride that still wasn’t too close to a subdivision of the drunkest, angriest monster truck drivers
When I was commuting by motorcycle and splitting lanes everybody was on their fucking phone on the freeway, at freeway speeds. This was ten years ago.
The attention harvesting companies have won. We just need to get the cars off the road so the operators can while away their days doom scrolling.
If your road bike gets stoled then you don’t have to worry about dying in traffic on your road bike anymore
48 hours later and although I’ve met some very nice people in encampments, I don’t think I’m getting it back
FTFM
Ryan actually works for the local government and knows what he’s talking about though.
I can confirm that way more new bike lanes have gone in and old bike lanes have been re-designed in the last few years than in the previous decade.
