A safe space to complain about jackass humans

I’d wager that their petty argument wouldn’t have escalated in the first place if they weren’t both armed. It was a stupid poker game and the bike person won.

legit question- are warning shots a thing (that one is supposed to do)? where does one aim one?

Not sure if they are a thing but I would shoot in the air as a warning before shooting a person with a knife. The more vertical you aim, the less speed it will have when it lands. It will still have plenty of power though.
Obviously shooting into the air can kill an innocent bystander. Recently a guy here was killed in his own garden from more than half a mile away (it was a hunter who I think fired his rifle accidentally). Still, I’d rather risk accidentally shooting somebody than shoot somebody intentionally if I have another option.

Okay having read the actual article we have no details on how it went down. We don’t know where he was in relation to either of them, where the couple were in relation to each other. We know he approached with a knife but in what manner and how quickly is unknown.

Everyone chill. This could be completely justified or really itchy trigger finger. Lets not argue over made up scenarios.

Everyone is chill. Apart from you, apparently.

do not shoot into the air, it can and will cause damage somewhere you can’t see and people definitely die this way
for that matter, warning shots are a bad idea. muzzle stays on target, maybe shoot for the gut instead of the heart but in an adrenaline situation where some jackass has just threatened your partner with a knife, 100% shoot them if you can. knives are more likely to be lethal within ~20 feet so this is not a case of unequal force

Yeah they do. Extremely rarely.

what’s your point? the risk isn’t significant enough to deter you from firing a warning shot into the air rather than shooting at the actual person with a lethal weapon threatening your partner?

having the firearm out is the warning

Back home, there would be a PSA running right about now every year pleading for residents not to shoot into the air in lieu of or along with fireworks. Apparently when you have hundreds of bullets raining down it turns into a bit of a fiasco.

I’d make a large wager that if the person on the bike didn’t have a gun, then no one would have been shot.

Warning shots aren’t a thing. Brandishing a firearm isn’t a thing. You don’t introduce a gun into any situation where you don’t intend to use it.

Doesn’t NYC have a law where if you so much as exit your vehicle during a road rage incident, it’s considered assault? I could be wrong, but in that context use of force could be justified.

It’s another argument if the shot was purposefully fatal, or if the gun could have been used as a deterrent rather than a deadly force.

isn’t it? I’ve definitely had a gun pulled on me strictly for intimidation where I don’t really think the gun holder had any intention of murder

Well people shoot warning shots too. It’s not a thing responsible gun owners do. .

Ah, there’s the rub. This is America we’re talking about after all, what use is responsibility when people feel it’s their god-given right to have a concealed pistol, on their person, at all times?

Yeah, we were talking about alternatives the bike gun lady could have taken. Just saying neither of those are advised/trained.

Don’t get me started on the rest of that. Idaho allows unlicensed conceal carry.

Yes. Obviously this depends on a bunch of things like how close the guy is and whether I think he really wants to kill my partner vs just be intimidating. I have had a guy pull a knife on me and put it near my throat. I don’t think he wanted to kill me. If I had a gun to his head at that moment I would not have pulled the trigger. Not everyone with a knife is determined to kill and not everyone with a gun is determined to kill.
Anyway, if the guy was a fair distance away and coming at us looking like he fully intends to use the knife, I’d shoot into the air and take the risk of hitting someone accidentally. A gunshot is loud as FUCK and likely to wake him up to some obvious facts.

Obviously this is all armchair quarterbacking. We haven’t seen the video, let alone experienced that specific situation.

Does NYC really have laws?

The thing is I don’t care, just like I don’t care that there are “responsible cops” or “responsible drivers.” No gun, no shooting. It is pretty simple. I’d again wager that neither party would be running their mouth off if they weren’t carrying lethal weapons.

Like that he’s going to need to prioritize shooting you with your own gun. Most people get shot with their own gun. Reasoning like yours is why.
