A safe space to complain about jackass humans

I feel like we’re implying here that police and your average citizen have the same level of state-sanctioning to employ violence, which is not the case.

Guess I need to move out of America where shit like this doesn’t happen. I wonder what the difference is between America and most other places which prevents that…

I would say they probably should have stopped before they killed them?

I’d also say that in this situation I would and have de-escalated (wow another thing we want cops to do) and here I stand not ever having gotten in a physical confrontation with someone despite years and years of, well, confrontation.

I can’t speak for anyone else but I don’t want cops to do that, I want cops to not exist so the question never even comes up as to what they should do in these scenarios.

I mean that’s excellent ideological one-upsmanship but the fact remains that there will always be a need for someone, whether you call them police or not, to de-escalate confrontations–similar to our judicial system but operating on the ground, to prevent situations like this.

Listen dood, we are never going to agree on this, partially bc i think groups like the Black Panthers and Pink Pistols are good, because they allow some of the most vulnerable groups to protect themselves against oppression and violence.
I’ve taken the chance to try to look at this from your perspective, and i realize that escalating a situation like this isn’t great, but also that there are sudden and involuntary actions that a traumatized vulnerable person might take that they would not do in the cold light of day.
I’d wager that your anti-firearm feelings might be biasing your views a little against using firearms for defense against violence. you seem to take a turn the other cheek approach. a woman cyclist outside of NYC who has been frequently endangered might not see it the same way

Yeah while I appreciate the Black Panthers and understand their need to carry rifles, I’d wager that they would have preferred not to have to do that to begin with–so all I’m seeing here is a fetishization of tools of war and murder. Violence begets violence.

Yeah I’m biased against guns, just like most people, especially outside of the USA where people can go out on the street and not fear that they’re going to get shot.

I’d again wager that if you take the gun out of this situation, no one would have died. For one, I bet the back and forth that led to the shooting wouldn’t have happened. Second, it is a lot harder to kill someone with a knife. The absolute worst case scenario is that someone dies. And someone died. Take the gun away and maybe the person on the bike would have died, and I don’t know if that is any better or worse in an easily avoidable situation like road rage.

So let me get this straight: you found stories supporting road rage and death after googling those terms. You’ll have to show me how many people in Moscow get killed as a result of road rage compared to the USA to prove your point. PS some of those article mention deaths in the context of road traffic fatalities, like the Moscow article.

Do y’all support castle doctrine too?

Take the gun out of the equation and nobody gets killed?

What the hell does the terrible state of our road infrastructure have to do with two people yelling at each other until one shoots the other? That’s a heck of a bait and switch.

Is your judgement so clouded by your bias that you can’t see that one party in this confrontation already brought two deadly weapons to bear against these cyclists and that this happens all the time, frequently ending in the cyclist being killed by the motorist.

yes, I’d prefer that the person who tried to kill the cyclists died as opposed to one or both the cyclists. Given the likely possibility that those were the two options.

I don’t believe that all violence is morally equal regardless of the victim or perpetrator.

I would prefer neither of the parties get killed, which was the likely outcome if you take the gun out of the equation?

Dude you’re ridiculous. Most people who get struck by cars aren’t struck as a result of road rage. Our roads don’t have good infrastructure, people lack driver’s education, and there is little enforcement of the rules of the road (like speeding, which without looking at the stats I’m gonna say is going to be the number one cause of road deaths across the board).

You’re making up fairy tales about how we need weapons to protect ourselves in this mad, crazy, messed up world because of YOUR bias for firearms. I’d love to love guns because they’re cool as shit but they’re also fucking dumb if you don’t want to kill people.

I gotta be honest, it sounds like you and apparently everyone you know has been extremely lucky in terms of how much violence drivers have intentionally brought to bear upon you for the sin of riding a bicycle.

Riding a bike is not the same as being born black, a woman, or worse, so let’s get off our high horse as poor cyclists. I’ve been hit my fair share and it has all been dumb accidents by careless idiots. Anyway, is that your argument here? Character assassination? And your solution is for me to carry a gun and shoot them when we get into a yelling match (because I have to defend the honor of my tribe!)? This is ludicrous. I’m just gonna continue being somewhat of an adult and not getting into fights with people, I guess, and good luck to y’all.

If this is that hypothetical Hollywood situation where a madman in a truck is chasing these two people, corners them in an alley, and they have no choice but to shoot their way out, I’ll eat my hat with relish! But that is such a rare exception to the norm that it makes no sense to assume?

i think you need to try to be more zen about this.

you may want to rewrite that part? Which in your mind is “worse,” being a woman or being black?
