AB's "Not Sure" & "Average" & "huh?" thread

Ah, someone on freddit suggested the same thing. So the idea is you don’t have to squeeze a chainstay between the crank and tire, so shorter chainstay and narrower Q-factor?[/quote]

ding ding ding we have a winnah

A carbon 650+ bike is very high on the list of bikes that I have no reason to have, but still keep wanting. I haven’t seen one that doesn’t have the lifted drive-side chainstay. I guess it’s easier to make metal nice and skinny to fit between crank and tire?

steel has the highest strength to volume ratio of readily used bike frame materials, hence radlawn plate stays don’t fail instantly (radlawn stays are still not the best idea though).
carbon has lower strength to volume making it harder to make super skinny stays strong enough, carbon is also be less tolerant of chain suck induced damage (plus old school MTB fans like me who lust after e-stay contraptions of yore are more likely to buy)

Those are 29+

Save the whole red bit, this bike is light and pretty fun.

  1. The Woodsmoke can be run 29, 29+, or 27.5+

  2. My understanding is that an elevated chainstay is mostly to avoid using a custom yoke. The chainstay needs to clear the tire and the chainring. Elevated chainstay avoids the chainring and you don’t have to use a forged yoke which can be very heavy.

Then you have to beef up the seat tube, and at least the Stache (the only welded e-stay bike since the Woodsmoke is carbon) has some elaborate extra stuff going on with the seat tube (maybe 3d-forged?), and uses a forged yoke on the NDS.

Oh shit, yeah, for some reason I thought the base model Woodies were aluminum but the full line is carbon. Nvm #2.

huh. I guess I didn’t see any reason for that to exist in 27.5+, but I guess that pic is that.

Dave Moulton built a bike for Pablo Escobar?

It doesn’t say anything about Dave Moulton making the bike for him. He could have acquired it any number of ways, and even if he did make it for Escobar, it’s possible that, at the time, it was just a request for a bike from a rich Colombian dude, who wasn’t necessarily an infamous terrorist, mass murderer, and drug trafficker.

True. Dave said on his facebook page:

Netflix Presents: BARCONS

that thing is way too big for pablo

Perfect joke

27.2 short-travel dropped coming from Specialized soon?

It’s been out, the XCP.

Oh, I had no idea.

Dropper posts are so fuckin’ expensive. I don’t even really like spending $400 on complete bikes.

I did, however, buy a QR seatpost clamp for $30 today.
