EDIT: Fuck me it gets worse the more I look at it. Look at all the bar tacks, they’re terrible. I’d love to see the inside of the bag and how messy everything is.
As someone who has walked many miles in SPDs, especially on hard surfaces, I’d have been very happy to switch into any non-bike shoes at any point.

I’m glad someone agrees with my thoughts. I’ve never said it in person as Evan is a nice guy but sometimes I feel the quality isn’t quite there.

serious q’s: would sloppiness like that affect the waterproofness of something like a camping tarp? and what makes a tarp worth $240 USD? materials, or is there a lot of work that goes into it?
I’m not seeing anything particularly sloppy in those. They are on the primitive side design-wise, but not incompetently sewn from what I can tell. To be sure, if a buddy of mine told me they paid $250 for that bag, I might laugh openly.
Re: tarps, some guys make ultralight rainflys out of fancy cuben fiber material. The material is eye-wateringly expensive in those. Silnylon is a lot cheaper. Heavy-ass “blue tarp” is cheap as fuck. That dude uses sinylon, so the price seems totally out of whack at first blush.
silnylon can still be pretty spendy depending on the quality/waterproofness (which is notoriously variable) and weight
it’s also pretty tricky to sew at home since it’s so slippery, which is why the cottage industry tarp prices are disproportionately higher than REI tarp prices, as opposed to something like a backpack which is a little easier to make nice seams on.
as far as sloppy stitching on a tent, holes are holes and you’ve gotta seal 'em regardless, but incorrectly tensioned seams are definitely less durable
Incompetently is precisely the word for it. The stitching of the right hand green pocket on the second bag will come completely undone if knicked. The thread is simply laying on the surface of the material with loose loops “holding” it in place. Patterning is way harder than checking your tension.
