All things NuMTB thread, now lower longer and slacker

I guess my tip would be don’t think about it too much. I dunno, I guess I’m not a goldilocks kind of person when it comes to bike fit. If you feel that your foot should be somewhere else, just pick it up and move it. It do be hard sometimes. There’s a long rock slab I ride on my regular loop and every time I get to the bottom of it my shoes are so damn in the pins.

It was definitely the thing that annoyed me the most this winter going to flats. Never felt like they were where I wanted them. Def a thing you take for granted with clippy jawns.
Then when I went back to my XT trails, I was also missing the supported feeling a bit. Really should spring for the saints like I said I would. Would also be nice for the many times I am descending not clipped in.

Yeah, that’s the bargain, I guess. Having my full foot supported with such large pedals feels so good, the annoying placement stuff is OK. There are super high-end Time mtb pedals with a big platform, but I know it’s going to have some level of the floaty feeling regardless.

Fatbikes are a thing

Not sure the lightning they had would care if you were on a fatbike.

Lightning snow storm does not sound fun.

People definitely not using fatbikes on those crazy snow races in Europe. God remember the fatbike craze? What a wild time that was.

Ugh I hate posting twice in a row, but I finally took a spin up my hill on the Fox36 Grip2 fork that I got from @jimmythefly months ago. I had bought bars with more rise thinking that the steerer was slightly short, but it is the same length as my Rockshox, possibly to the millimeter.

Initial impressions vs. the Charger 2 Rockshox: God damn I do not like having a suspension component that isn’t set up for me yet, but I do like turning knobs. The added HSC (I assume the sole rebound setting on my Rockshox is LSC) setting on the rebound damper makes me giddy–yay, more knobs to twiddle.

I have my Rockshox feeling both plush and poppy. Fox with recommended settings feels slightly harsh and decidedly not-poppy. I dunno, maybe it needs a service? @jimmythefly I think you said that it had recently gotten one?

The Fox felt generally like it was using more of its travel more of the time, if that makes sense. Though I didn’t use the last 10-20mm. I felt like maybe I wanted it to ride a little higher, but I only had this thought based on where the o-ring was after my climb up the hill and not how the bike actually felt. My goal is to make it feel a little less like I’m gonna blow my hand off the bars but have it pre-load better for when I want to get the front wheel off the ground.

So what do I do? I think it is going to be a dance between air pressure and low speed compression damping? Add air, remove some LSC damping? Remove air, add LSC? Something else?

I’m not sure about the service, I would assume it hasn’t had one. (Unless the guy I bought if from said it did, and I passed that info on to you? But I don’t think so).

I still like my fatbike. long island trails they are still very much a thing.

I haven’t had the chance to ride one in the snow but my buddy has a Beargrease that’s built pretty light and riding that on some fairly mellow trails one summer afternoon was some of the most fun I’ve ever had on a mountain bike.

I just got one this year! Currently riding it rigid with 29x2.8s on mtn bike rides with kids or wife. Is fun.

What % sag did you start with? I’m guessing the harshness you’re feeling is from the small bump compliance. You’ll probably want to let out 5 psi and see how it does. If you’re around 30% sag and you’re still not getting the small bump response you want, it’s probably time for a 50 hr service at a minimum.

The biggest difference I’ve found between Fox and RS is with midstroke support. I’ve only had the dampers with LSC as the only knob, though.

I had it at 25 but fork felt dead and I saw Fox suggests 15-20, so I dialed it up a few psi to try to hit 20.

Does anyone offer (lower/seal) service kits for Marzocchi/Fox forks that include single-use packets of oil?

This might be what I need:

@Crustradamus Maybe try taking a token out and see if that does it. The deadness may be the rebound being too slow.

@Rent-to-own-Faxmachine The 250 mL ogold il bottles are good for a few service intervals. The Teflon stuff I’ve only found in quarts, though.
