All things NuMTB thread, now lower longer and slacker

a mechanic who just installed his first set for a customer said the shifting experience felt like SRAM 11-speed, which has been his favorite (and so many others). It is a smidge faster than AXS transmission, but only slightly since cassette still only shifts at one spot.

Go carbon for a “nice bike to have around for a while”

The period-correct kits are a nice touch.

Wheels swap. It fits a 2.6, but does it need a 2.6?

State releases their steel hardtail. Not too different than the others(?), but it’s cheap and comes in nice colors. Very saturated market now

UDH and $495 for a frameset is pretty sweet.

It’s a whole business plan for them. I guess they’re ok at it? Always kind of cringe when I see one because it’s invariably poorly set up and poorly maintained.

Their QC is garbage too

and $1500 for a mtb with no dropper, low level microshift and low level tektro brakes is not a particularly good deal.

yeah the upgrades are also mostly priced terribly

  • enve wheels??? for $999 (“save $400”, no you aren’t saving, the stock wheels are why you can charge $400 less) , seems fair but who tf is putting enve wheels on this budget hard tail?
  • axs shifting for $499, but you don’t get an xd driver so you get an 11-50 nx cassette, so basically paying very slightly under msrp for an gx axs derailleur and shifter
  • pnw dropper at full MSRP ($199), no credit for the seat post you aren’t getting when you upgrade
  • some sram brakes i’ve never heard of for full msrp ($149.99). every online retailer sells these for $75 per brake. so no credit for the brakes they aren’t selling you.

Decided that it is time to start gathering materials for a Fox fork and shock service. Next thing I know, I’m staring at this list of oil viscosities compiled by PVD:

First ride on the new bike! Was thinking, man I’m out of shape, then realized I knocked 10 minutes off my 10 mile 1.5k of vert loop.
Need to mess with the brake and shifter / dropper lever mounting to better fit my huge hands, and play with the shocks a bit. Rear felt a bit too soft in the start of the curve, and fork too firm. Looking forward to messing with it more.
Still on the fence whether the 2.6 tires are too big.

Should I buy this late ‘18 stumpy? It’s not a slack jaw by today’s standards but it rides snappy and climbs real good. Buncha farkles and fancy suspension mods.

Coworker is letting me hold onto it, can’t get rid of it for $2k. He’s thinking he’d be happy taking $1,250 b/c it means he has someone to chase up hills.

Seems like a good deal, tho he told me how cheap new bikes are right now and what 3-4k will get you off the rack.. makes the deal a bit less attractive as it’s been ridden pretty hard

I was looking at epic evos last year, oddly this is pretty close geo with more squishy

That’s a smoking deal for under $1500 IMO

It’s a bad time to sell bikes (i have 2 for sale right now and like no interest at all), so I dont htink his price is bad as is.

It’s still about $4k for a decent bike, so if you can get that one for cheap and it still rides well, ride it for 2 years and get sometihng else later?

@schultzor you been riding that jenson pike?
So far I love mine

My coworker, who is a fair bit heavier than me, put the two spacers in and he said it made a world of a difference.
For me at 150lbs, it’s great without any volume spacers.

I put 46 miles on that bike today and it ripped. I mean, as much as a 30lb steel hard tail with 2.6s can. It’s a slog uphill, but the fork is v plush.

btw if anyone has any extra 29er boost wheels lying around, this thing needs em bad.
i wanted to put my trail bike wheels on it, but very different rotor sizes and one is 6-bolt vs centerlock on the hardtail and it just got too complicated for it to be ever worth it to swap them for a ride. just need to get a second set and i’m cheap so i haven’t been able to pul the trigger on anything.
somehow the price of used wheels hadnt hit rock bottom like the price of bikes.

Yeah I think I’ll grab it, if anything just to get back into riding, and keep as a buddy bike for later on.

Found the huge park near me has a new sanctioned trail network, lots of flow and DH stuff- like a mini demo forest.

I was the only guy on a pedal bike, maybe 25 other riders all on e-bikes

Scene has really changed in the 5 years I’ve been out

I have not ridden mine yet, just got that bike back from the shop where they installed the fork and did some other deferred maintenance. Good to know about the volume spacers - I’ve got about 80lbs on you so I should probably just put them in off the bat.
