I did the DIY measurement and it confirmed my belief. Popped into this thread to look for guidance and yolo’d the argo. If anything, I’m worried about the length.
Narrower saddles are unbearable. I’ve always preferred wide, flat, stiff saddles. Couldn’t handle an Aliante. Have an Arione now that’s not working out. Used to like an Antares, the width for the OG version, I believe was 142mm. Also have a wide flat Prologo that’s not bad.
I like the argo so far after maybe 100mi. it feels more sensitive to height and tilt than fore-aft position which is surprising. definitely doesn’t have the familiar feeling of sitting on the tail of my penis so HY
This is the best 3d image I could find that represents this phenomena.
Clearly, the width of the contact points are going to get narrower as the pelvis rotates forward. I’m sure this is going to vary tremendously based on the anthropometry of the individual. Some folks are going to rotate their pelvis more or less.
I’ve used one of these guys before, which might be the same idea.
“Scans the pressure created by the ischial tuberosity (sit bones) and calculates the width with millimeter precision”
Plus, the readout is in German, so you know it’s precise.
The question then become whether the pelvic angle is the same when sitting on that vs. on a bike. You got your precision, but did you get your accuracy?
my unscientific measurement was based on me leaning forward with my knees roughly together to get in the ballpark of pedalling position on a road bike, but it looks like that ergon machine has a diagram indicating sitting upright on it
That was one thing I tried when I used it. The variation between sitting straight up and sitting bent forward wasn’t massive for me. I don’t remember the exact number, but it was within what could be % error. I did five measurements and had a variation of 2 or 3 mm.
I think the take away is that your sitbones will contact the saddle in the same spot, irrespective of the angle of your torso. But, I’m not a physio.
Is anyone in love with the Special-lies Power saddles? I just picked up a 168 one to try. It’s almost square. It would be for poop-barning applications. Ive gone that wide just because a B-17 is my best saddle so far and I hoped it might approximate the width.
Yea it’s a good saddle. I’ve had one one on a couple of bikes and it’s been good. I found it to be challenging if you like to move around on your saddle since it pretty much locks you in to one spot.
You should get your sit bones measured though because a b-17 and the power are about as far apart as saddles get. Any good specialized dealer will likely do it for free.
