Bent fork ends?

Somehow (read: I probably dropped it) the front fork end on my trek 1000 got bent in and wouldnt receive a wheel. I bent it back with a wrench (it’s an alloy fork) and rode probably 15 miles on it today, seems fine, insight on the situation? Is it prudent to take this as a sign to buy a frame, or ride it as is for a while?

You don’t bend aluminum back like you can with steel. Once its bent its done for. I’d get a new fork ASAP. If it was a dropout I personally would probably ride it until it broke, but having your fork fail is gonna be pretty catastrophic.

Oh, and why are you considering buying a new frame when you bent the fork? Just tired of that bike?

I’m pretty sure its a steel alloy fork (it bent like steel and i was under that impression) and I’m considering a new frame because the 1000 isnt particularly classy. I think I’ll put the stock fork back on my BK and ride the slice carbon on the 1000 for now just to be safe!

Oh well thats different. Usually when people say alloy with regard to a bike part it means aluminum.

see if a magnet sticks to the fork.

I love the trek 1000.
Is it red and white?
The girl who lives upstairs in our house rides one with the seat slammed and some weird bullhorns.

What pirate said. If it is aluminum, I would replace it one way or another. Alu forks suck.

whats with the alu fork hate, just a harsh ride? Just curious because I’m building up an aluminum frame with and aluminum fork.

mostly the harsh ride. but there are other factors, such as tire size and pressure that effect how harsh the ride is. that said, most new al frames come with carbon forks, and higher end al frames now have carbon stays.

Back to the original question. if the fork is steal it is fine. if not its not.

I think its actually an aluminum fork, looks like i’ll be putting the carbon fork on the bareknuckle on the trek tomorrow after work. I really like the frame, but a lot of people seem to hate on em, I personally cant get enough of it built up with full ultegra. It’s the white and blue paint scheme, I think an 04.

The Trek 1000 is a great frame for the price. Unfortunately, there is a lot of hate in cycling for entry level gear and Trek.

agreed the 1000 has always been a great alu frame a little on the heavier side which has a more forgiving ride than the superlight alu frames built up with nice components it can be great bike
