I told you it was a hobby of mine. And I’m currently getting ready to sell my business so it’s extra topical.

And Spinal Tap quotes don’t count.

Does he not know about all road, gravgrav, plus bikes, adventure bikes, poopbarning, etc.? The war is over, but Graham has ptsd.

Honestly, wtf right? It seems like even a standard Trek or Specialized shop has bikes that are comfortable and have bikes w large clearances.

They’re aluminum and have dick brakes, but not all. Shops that stock Jamis Coda seem to sell out of them here…

The retrogrouches love that kind of talk. It’s not the clearances that bother them – there are plenty of “classics” collectors who will fight over tight-clearance frames if they were glued together by A Name – but that it’s made from something that isn’t steel.

And Grant is pushing MTOmafietsen, so it’s not surprising that he’s claiming that most everything else is impossible to be comfortable on.

i know this thread is the greg petersnaps thread now, but lets talk about geekhouse for a hot minute.

john probs said on his reddit AMA that after he recovered his stolen geekhouse cross bike, he sent it back to get repaired and marty closed shop and disappeared with prolly’s money and bicycle.

anybody have more info? this juicy.

In the bicycle and music worlds (the ones I’m familiar with) this seems to be how about 10%-20% of boutique businesses end. Person running the business can’t do it anymore (because money or because they are some kind of self-styled mercurial genius or cos other reasons) and they stop doing the thing, but don’t have the money to return anyone’s money.

Then while trying to run from the problem of owing everyone money, they decide they can’t return the goods that they have because then they’d have to also acknowledge that they don’t have the money and that doesn’t fit with running away from the money problem.

This has happened a bunch of times in the weird and wonderful world of saxophone mouthpiece making and refacing and obviously we’ve seen it happen in the bike world with some regularity.

I think things get to this point because we’re all, as customers, used to dealing with the atrocious customer service that a lot of bike/music boutique brands ask us to put up with and we accept as quirks of mercurial brilliant craftspeople. So we’re like “oh, well, yeah it’s been 3 months with no communication since I mailed a check to a PO box in Nevada. Check cleared 2.9 months ago, but it’s probably fine.” So then things have to be so bad before we assume something’s wrong that by the time we tell any sane person about it, they (reasonably) are looking at us like we’re out of our goddamn minds for waiting this long.

(Sorry Marty if you’re reading this, business is tough bizness)

That’s a bummer to hear. I liked Marty. People always ask about my geekhouse and what happened to him as he seemed to just disappear. Now I know. :frowning:

BTW I was reading the 200 responses over the last day and was waiting for someone to make this point. In an established brand one of the most valuable assets in the business relationships. And that goes doubly so when it’s a dude who has been working with specific factories overseas for decades.

I was an avid record buyer in the 90’s, and was totally used to sending cash to some random distro/label/person, waiting 2-6 months, and then probably getting most of what I ordered, or an apologetic note and a partial refund.
It blows my mind that shit like this still happens in the internet era.

Fuck it. Move the MUSA steel to Zen Fab. Offer Ti through No22 and bring back lower price point options through Maxway, Tange or even Colossi.
